I’d like to share my research on my Morris ancestors from the townland of Crohanesouth Co. Tipperary.  It would be great to hear from anyone who has Morris or Norton ancestors from the area, more info, or suggestions!

As I understand, parts of Crohane switched from Ballingarry Parish to Drangan Parish in 1826.  Today Crohane is divided up between the two parishes.

My 3G grandparents were Patrick Morris and Catherine Norton, who lived in Crohane in the early to mid-1800s, according to the baptism records of children in Ballingarry and Drangan parishes. I also found a Patrick Morris of Upper Crohane in the Tithe Applotment and the Griffiths valuation records.

I have record of these kids:

Michael P Morris (abt. 1820-1896) - my GG grandfather, immigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1851; married Ellen Duggan or Sullivan & Mary Noonan Houston in U.S. Didn’t find Michael’s Irish baptismal record.

Patrick Morris (abt. 1825-1877) - immigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin; married Johanna (Julia) Carroll in U.S.  Didn’t find Patrick’s Irish baptismal record.

William Morris (abt. 1822-?) - never emigrated; married Anastasia Dunn, lived in Crohane, Drangan Parish; children Catherine (m. Thomas Halloran, lived in Glengall adjoining Crohane, kept in touch with her American cousins), Bridget #1, Bridget #2, Mary, Patrick (m. widow Bridget Hoban, lived in Dublin). I've been able to find record of some of their descendants. Didn’t find William’s Irish baptismal record.

Jeremiah Morris (1815-?) - baptism 29 Sep 1815, Ballingarry Parish, listed same parents and Crohane as town land.  No more records of him found.

Mary Morris (1827-?) - baptism 25 June 1827, Drangan Parish, listed same parents and Crohane as town land.  No more records of her found.

I found three other Morris couples in Crohane in those parish records as baptizing kids about the same time (1814 – 1830).  Edward Morris, wife Margaret Strapp; Thomas Morris, wife Mary Fitzgerald; James Morris, wife Margaret Duggan. The three Morris male names are also listed in the Tithe Applotment books and the Griffith Valuation for Crohane.  So I’m guessing they were either brothers or cousins of my 3G grandfather Patrick Morris.

Parish records in the area show a LOT of Morris couples getting married and baptizing babies in the early part of the 1800s, but records show the Morris name rapidly decreasing in the area after the famine.

I’ve been in touch with a helpful Morris family that now lives in the same area of Crohane. Although they've lived there for over 100 years, they aren't related because they arrived from Glengoole after my Morris ancestors left – although we might be related from way back.

This family says my distant relative was probably Patrick Morris (abt. 1879-1940) of Crohane, who was a Tipperary County Commissioner for Fethard beginning in 1906 (Sinn Fein). I believe he was the son of Joanna Power and William Morris, who was probably a 1st cousin to my GG grandfather Michael who immigrated to Wisconsin.

Would be great to connect with anyone who is related, or has info or suggestions.

Thanks!
