I am trying to trace the baptism of William Hickey born 1823 and emigrated to Australia. The only specific reference to his place of birth is Cordangan listed on one of his daughters birth certificates in Australia. I don't what would have been the parish for Condangan and where the baptism records would be held.

  • billabong,

Cordangan is an old Civil Parish that is now part of the present Catholic Parish of Bansha and Killmoyler which adjoins the parish of Cahir. I was born in Cahir and would be familiar with that area.

The Church Baptismal and Marriage records  for that parish are available from 1820 and 1822 respectively on the National Library of Ireland site called Parish Register. The original records were transcribed in a clear script and nicely formated so they are very easy to search but only by scrolling in chronical order,.(they are the clearest set that I have seen in Ireland ).

There are multiple Hickey Births and Marrages on the records including 1837 Michael Tierney to Margaret Kirby,1838 John Hickey to Bridget Green, 1838 Daniel Hickey to Margaret Dawson,

1939 Danial Hickey to  Ally Birmingham?  1849 William Hickey to Catherine Burke +++

The practice at that time was  neighbours to marry  bur because Cahir was so close that is also a possibility.

There are Tierney holdings listed in the Tithe applotment records 1828 and in Griffiths Valuations c.1852  fot that Parish.

Some of the families that lived in tha area when your ancestors were there are stil lining in rhe same holdings

    Enjoy

William Hickey of Cordangan was the son of Patrick Hickey and Ellen Slattery.

William was baptised 3 Mar 1823 in Tipperary Town and lived in Gortaknockare Cordangan

William married Mary Keating of Gortnavoher Aherlow 26 Nov 1846 in the church at Lisvernane Aherlow. They had one son John born in Gortaknockare  baptised at Tipperary Town 29 Nov 1847.

Mary Keating was baptised 10 Apr 1826 - Her parent's were John Keating and Mary Neil  of Gortnavoher.

The Griffith Valuation for Gortaknockare were recorded on 29 June 1847 and shortly before William left on 7 Apr 1849 and this is why William appears on the Griffith Valuation.

William Hickey his wife Mary Son John and brother Daniel (26 July 1818-1876 Kew Melbourne) ) applied to Smith Barry the landlord for compensation and assistance to emigrate on the 2 Jan 1848. They were granted £18.3/-.which included contribution towards fares. William was crossed off the rental book 12 June 1849.

The names on the rental list Daniel 1756-1811 Patrick 1811-1845 William 1845-1849

The earlier Hickey's are buried in Mount Bruis Cemetery

    I hope this helps

  • Thank you very much for your comprehensive response

It is very much of interest

I have a dilemma as on William Hickey's death certificate lists his parents as William & Ellen but also that he was born in 1826 which contradicts the shipping records which indicate he was born in 1823

His children were John, Patick, William, Ellen, Mary, Daniel, Bridget, Julia Ellen, John James, John James and Michael Edmund which tends to support Williams parents as Patrick and Ellen.

I was aware there was a Daniel Hickey on the James T Foord but wasn't aware of a relationship.

    Bill
