Hello everyone. I'm trying to find out more about the Hamilton Holmes family who lived (rented) at the Deerpark at least between 1866 and 1868- possibly there til 1871. The father was James Gustavus Hamilton Holmes (1810- 1885) , a paymaster in the British Army for most of his life. I believe his father was Peter Holmes (1765 - ?)  and his mother Henrietta Mary Hamilton (1744 - 1844) and grandfather was James Archibald Hamilton DD (1747 - 1815) who was Archbihop of Ross (1790- 1804) but also astronomer at the Observatory in Armagh.

  • Hello Lizzie,

Civil registration only began in Ireland in 1864 for catholics and 1845 for protestants.  Up to that the records available are church and land records.  Church records usually start about 1830 with some old towns going back to 1790 or so.  So I would say that your best bet to search for records is to look back through old estate records.  I don't know which english aristocrat owned Deerpark but chances are that the records are held either in the National archives or held locally in a heritage centre or library.  You could also apply to the english national archives for the military records pertaining to your ancestor.

Sorry that I can't be of more service,

  • Hi Lizzie.

The following might be of some interest to you. The connection to Deerpark for the Hamiliton Holmes family is explained in the Landed Estates database (NUIG). Elizabeth Prittie (sister to the first Lord Dunalley) married Peter Holmes in 1765. Lord Dunalley owned all of Cloughjordan and it's hinterland (including Deerpark) and his base was at Kilboy outside Nenagh. Alot of the Dunalley Papers were destroyed during a fire at Kilboy however alot of what survives is available to view online at the National Library of Ireland. Deepark was rented by the Trench and Robinson family from the Dunalley Estate. The Reverend Frederick F. Trench was the recorded occupier in the mid 19th century. I presume this was a member of the Trench family from nearby Cangort Estate.

This couple (E Pritte & P Holmes) had no male heir and their property passed to another Peter Holmes (cousin). The Holmes -Hamilton connection follows this

"George Holmes of Liscloony, county Offaly, was an uncle of Robert Holmes of Johnstown. His son, Gilbert Holmes, was father of Peter Holmes of Peterfield who married Henrietta Hamilton in 1796 (''The Monthly Magazine'' 1796) and of the Very Reverend Gilbert Holmes, Dean of Ardfert, who, in 1810, married Lydia Waller Saunderson and had six sons.

More information on the Holmes family is included. Have a look through this database with the information you already have for the separate families. Also there is information on the various Hamilton Families. There's no record in the Parish of this family but the current family who own and work at Deerpark may have some information. I will get back in touch if anything comes to light.

Please let us know how you're getting on.

  • Hi Lizzle,

Just found your post. You will find a lot of info on the Holmes family on the website CAPEDIA which gives the genealogy of hte Holmes/Hamilton family up to William the Conqueror. You can start from the couple Holmes/Hamilton.

My grand mother's grand mother was born Julia Holmes, she was the Daughter of Peter Holmes of Nenagh and  Henrietta Hamilton (daughter of James Archibald Hamilton).

Julia's had 8 brothers and sisters, among them James Gustavus Hamilton Holmes who married Elizabeth Knight. They had 9 children.

    Cheers
