I'm looking for the family of Johanna Egan born in Clonmel in Sept 1880, daughter of William and Johanna Coffey. She emmigrated to the USA around 1897, married Frank Yorty and had a son Samuel Yorty, mayor of Los Angeles in the 60's/70's. Sam came to Clonmel and donated some money towards the renovation of St Patrick's well.

  • Hello Mireille,

Most of the parish registers will be online for free on July 8 th from the National Library.  We are all eagerly awaiting this.  YOu will be able to look up marriage records , birth records and possibly some death records.

I went to www.clonmelgraveyards.com and searched for William Egan.  This site has all Clonmel and surrounding graveyards online.  It costs about 10 euro to join but is then free to be searched.   There are many pictures of the graves but some of the older and unreadable ones are not featured.  However the site takes you to the original burial registers belonging to the local council.  It contains a mine of information  I found two william Egans  in this district but one fit the criteria.

William Egan, 15 Cashel Road, Clonmel, Gardener, died 3rd March 1920, aged 76.  Place of birth Ballylooby. Married. Catholic. Died in St. Joseph's Hospital.  Cause of death Senile Decay.  Informant Johanna Egan

From this information you will be able next week to go on the website of the national archives and perform a search for William Egan, born about 1834ish  in Ballylooby (a small village about 18 miles from Clonmel) .  You will also be able to search for the marriage certificate of William and Johanna about 1854 to 1880 or such.  And as you know both parents names you will be able to search the parish registers of ST. Peter and Pauls for Johanna and all brothers and sisters.

I live in Clonmel just about a mile from St. Patrick's well and I know that there are some plaques on the walls from various American groups and families.  I will go there and see if there is anything there pertaining to your family.

Hope this gets you some way along the road.

    Kind Regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Mireille,  That should have read 1844.  Can't seem to find William and Johanna in the Irish census.  Was it just Johanna who emigrated or did her parents go also.  It's not until you get birth certificates and marriage certificates that you can verify if the people above are actually your ancestors.  Always keep an open mind.

  • Hi Mireille,

Just back from St. Patrick's Well.  Found the stone inscription and took a photo.  Will try to upload it to this message.  Can't guarantee I'll do it correctly, so please bear with me.  I had often wondered when I saw that inscription about the benefactors as there wasn't an Irish name on it.  I wondered many times about the Irish Isreal Society?

I can't seem to upload my photo.  It is too large at 6 mb and It won't allow me to send a zip version.  I have changed it to a gif but it is still too large.  So sorry about that.

  • Dear Anne,

I am so grateful for your precious help. I will look further into it as Johanna Egan had a brother James, older I would think, who at some point emigrated to Liverpool. He was married with quite a large family, one of his daughter Mary Elizabeth Egan (born 14 Oct 1910, probably in Ireland) was the grandmother of my husband). I'm doing those research for him and our son.

As for Johanna's and James' parents, I'm not certain but think they stayed in Ireland and didn't go to the US with her.

Thank you ever so much for your help, hope to speak soon.

    Kind regards, Mireille

  • Dear Michael,

Thank you very much for your post. Yes my husband's family is related to Sam Yorty. Sam's mother, Johanna Egan (born in Clonmel in 1880) was the sister of my husband's great grandfather (James Egan born 1875),

Johanna emigrated to the USA in 1897 and married Frank P Yorty in 1899. James Egan went to Liverpool and married Bridget Maher (from Clonmel too) in 1903. One of their children Mary Elizabeth Egan is my husband's grandmother.

We would love to hear anything you know about the family. If you have any info regarding Sam's vivsit in Clonmel I would be very grateful to hear.

Thank you very much for getting in touch,

    Kind regards, Mireille

  • Hello. My name is Erin Egan originally of Lincoln Nebraska, now Omaha. I am related to Johanna on my Fathers side, and visited the cemetery in 1993.  I have many photos I would like to share, and letters regarding this topic, but I am more comfortable responding via email than this thread if that's alright. I also would like more information, but believe I can help greatly with your search. My great aunt was the historian of the family, Irene May Egan of lincoln Nebraska, she passed away in the year 2000, I inherited boxes of photos, letters, of the people you have mentioned in this thread. I have often wanted to know more about them, and perhaps we could help each other. Please contact me at my email address. erineganrealtor@gmail.com.  Visit Ireland in 2016, and would like to visit with relations who may still be in the country. Thank you so much and I hope to hear from you soon,  Erin E Egan
