I am interesting in finding out information about my family, who lived in Clonmel in the late 19th early 20th century. I have a postcard of the St Peters and Paul's Church, from a Thom O'Brien, Kickham St., dated 1913 to my grandmother May Grice (nee Dempsey) Brisbane, QLD Australia. The postcard announced the death of his mother, Mary O'Brien, May's mother's sister, in 1913 and how she was buried in The Powerhouse Cemetery. Thom had 2 sisters Katie and Ellie. Any information re these families would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much Col. I think that the O'Brien family at 38 Kickham St are my relatives and that Mary O'Brien is my great great aunt. May Dempesy, my grand mother was born in Brisbane , so I would be surprised if you found anything about her in Ireland. If it is not to much trouble , Mary's sister Ellen Fanning was born in Clonmel , but left in the late 1880's and settled in Brisbane. She left a daughter behind named Johanna, birth 1884? I think Johanna, or Annie , as she was know by the family, father was Patrick Dempsey, my great grandfather. He and Ellen married in Brisbane. Thank you once again, I visited Clonmel last year and walked Kickham St. Love it. Jen

Hi Jen
Here's Johanna
Name:Johanna FanningDate of Birth:20-Jan-1881
Registration Date:29-Jan-1881Address:Fethard RoadParish/District:CLONMELGender:FemaleCountyCo. Tipperary
Denomination:Civil Parish
Father:Unknown UnknownMother:Ellen FanningOccupation:Unknown
Sponsor 1 /
Informant 1:Kate Maherwww.rootsireland.ie/ has Fanning baptisms in Clonmel Civil Parish but they only start in 1865. There are records for O'brien Thomas & Ellen but not with matching parents; none for Catherine.
The R C registers are free to search online (registers.nli.ie/). There are baptisms for Clonmel 1843-64; 1864-78; 1836-51 & 1859-81. It's hard going but you might find them there.

Thank you once again Col, I will look at the baptism records for Clonmel. I think Johanna born in 1881 is my great aunt. Does you investigation suggest that both of her parents were unknown ? Also I am uncertain of Address Fethard and sponsor 1 . Is the sponsor Kate Maher? Also a little confused as to what Civil parish refers to. Thank you once again . Johanna died in Brisbane during the WW2. Jen

I'm afraid the copy & paste from www,rootsireland.ie/ is not great; father 'unknown unknown' means neither his first or last name is known; mother is Ellen Fanning
Fethard should be Fethard Road. Spponsor 1 is the only one given and it's Kate Maher
Civil Parishes (govt) records started in 1864; prior to that church records were the source.

Thank you Col, I was able to google Fethard Rd and saw that it was in walking distance of Kickham. I also looked at the church records and found Johanna's baptism at St Peters and Paul. The writhing was difficult and I had to google the Latin at the top of the register. I noted that there is only one parent and that one of the "susceptorum " was a Patritus ( is that Patrick ?) O'Brien . I think that was Ellen's brother-in - law . The "celebrantis" , I think this is the priest, was a different name to others in the register. Would the fact that Johanna was illegitimate have anything to do wth that? If it is not too much trouble would you be able to help me with Ellen's family? I think she was born in Clonmel in 1858 and probably baptised at St Peters & Paul, parents could be Michael and Bridget. Where would I look to see if she had any other siblings besides Mary O'Brien. I know I am asking a great deal, but would it be possible to find out anything about Kate Maher, if she was a neighbour ??? Thank you Col. Best wishes Jen.

Good morning Col. I am thinking of visiting Clonmel in 2017. Would it be possible to view the baptismal records at St Peters and Paul? And is there a local historical society I could make connection with? Thank you and best wishes Jen

Hi Jen,
Assumptions above correct.
Here's the Clonmel info:
St. Peter and Paul’s Church have records since the middle of the 1800’s of marriages, baptisms and deaths. They would need fairly accurate details of dates as they do not have these on computer and must look back through the books. These books are not available to the public.

Thank you so much Col for your reply. It is looking like my family had many connections with this area of Clonmel. Would it be possible to find out if Michael Fanning and Bridget Griffin were also born in the area? Would I be able to find birth, marriage and death records? I will look at some of the suggestions in your replays. I think I came across some information that Michael Fanning had a police record.
Anyway, thank you so much for helping me imagine where family came from. I will definitely contact the church before my next visit. Best wishes Jen.

Thank you Col, seems as if the family has lived in Clonmel for some time, there are probably some still there. I will look at St Mary's records. Is it the older of the 2 churches? Yes , Mick Fanning is an Australian surfer, who comes from Coolangatta, on the Gold Coast. My father, Ellen's grandson owned a holiday unit at Coolangatta and I have had many swims there. Probably related, both far to fair haired and skin for Qld, would have aged better in Ireland. Thanks once again. Jen
