Hi, My great grandmother was Mary Dwyer who married Martin Quigley here in 1905. I have their marriage cert and Mary's father is down as Jeremiah Dwyer. The story is that the Dwyer family disowned Mary as she was marrying Martin who was a British soldier. Her father and brothers were farmers in Clonmel. I am having difficulty finding her family. Martin was from Thurles, although stationed in Clonmel, and they moved to Thurles after the marriage and I can find them on the 1911 Census. I cannot find Mary's birth which should be abt. 1885 nor a census record for her for 1901 anywhere in Clonmel. I have found a Thomas Dwyer and Anastasia Bishop who could be her parents, who married in 1876 but he was in the army and I am sure that they were farmers and  it clearly states that Mary's father was Jeremiah on her marriage cert. Also they had a Mary Dwyer who married a William Cook, so cannot be the same family. Interestingly though, there was an Anastasia Dwyer as witness at Marys wedding in 1905. At the time of her marriage Mary was down as a domestic Servant. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Many thanks

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I know you indicated that the Dwyers were from Clonmel but I did not see any records in that area but I did find a family in the 1901 census and a related civil birth record for a Mary Dwyer born in 1884 with a father Jeremiah. You will need to sign-in to see the record.

The key piece of information we need is the name of Mary's mother. Anyway, take a look at the two records and let me know what you think.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you very much. I did see that family in Cassiestown but my family seemed adament that they were from Clonmel. I have looked at the map and Cassiestown seems a long way from Clonmel. However it must be a strong contender.

On the 1911 census , Mary states her place of birth as Clonmel.

My mother also thinks that Mary had a sister called Lena and Katy who went to Australia and one of them married a "Mcinerney ". All heresay of course.

The census with Anastasia on sounds more promising but the father being a soldier does not.  Maybe Jeremiah was not Mary's father's first name. I have tried looking at Ellen / Lena and Kate/Kathleen Dwyer but still no joy.  Thank you so much for helping, very much appreciated

    Kind Regards

    Karen

  • Hello, My family came to Australia in about 1863. My great grandfather was Patrick Quirk who had married Alice Dwyer at Clonmel about 1857. Her father was Jeremiah Dwyer. The Quirks a d the Dwyers lived at neighbouring properties at Ballydavid, Cahir.

  • Hi Jenny

Lovely to hear from you . That is very interesting especially as there were some sisters who went to Australia. I will take a look at Ballydavid and see if I can find the families. Do you have a tree at all ?  I am on ancestry.                                       Kind Regards.     Karen ..........jkmt@hotmail.co.uk

  • Hi Karen, I do have a tree on Ancestry and it is public but for some reason they have splintered it into a dozen different trees. I will try to update it when I have a few minutes.

Patrick came to Australia with his father James Quirk and his mother nee Catherine Connors, his brother John who was married to a Catherine Dwyer (her father was Edward), and his sisters Margaret and Bridget.

Patrick and Alice, my great grandparents had a child John born in Tipperary, presumably Caher, about 1857.

Different records have the names Caher, Ballydavid, Kilmoyler and Clonmel on them. I am not sure how interchangeable all these are.

  • Yes, Alice came too. On the birth of her first child in Australia, she said that she had married on 18 Jan 1857 and she had a child John born in Tipperary in 1858. IN 1864 she was aged 28. My email is joyjenblue@gmail.com.

  • Hi Karen

Thomás Dwyer and Anastasia Bishop ware my great great grandparents. Their children were born in clonmel barracks and it is stated on their birth registration so if ‘your’ Mary is their daughter it will say clonmel infantry on the cert.
