Hi,
I'm looking for any information on Johanna Mackin (possibly also Macken or Makin).
I know that she travelled to Australia aboad the ship Southesk in 1877 departing London on 17th March 1877 and arriving in Moreton Bay on 4th June 1877. She was listed as single and 22 years old at the time and is listed as "free" meaning she probably paid her own fare. She gave birth to my Great Grandfather, Peter in 1880 in Toowoomba, Queensland.
In Australia she was married to Stephen Gavin (no official record). She died in Toowoomba, Queensland in 1913. Her death certificate lists here parents simply as "Makin" and her birth place simply as Tipperary, Ireland. Peter's birth certificate lists her birthplace as Cloheen, C. Tipperary, Ireland.
I'm looking for any records of her existence in Ireland and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and I only found one record that might be a lead. There was a Joanna Mackin who was baptized on December 13 1857 in Ardfinnan RC parish. Parents were Patrick Mackin and Mary Condon. Ardfinnan RC parish is two parishes east of Clogheen. Here is a link to the parish register for Clogheen. You may want to search the records in the 1850s in case Johanna's record was missed in transcription. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0116 Are you aware of siblings?

Hi Roger,
Thank you so much for the quick reply. The date and location checks out. But I think what gives me a lot more confidence is that I had another look at the passenger list for the Southesk and there is also a 28 year old Michael Condon listed! Perhaps a cousin and surely not a coincidence?
Also listed in the Ardfinnan records are the baptisms of Edmundum (I assume Edward?) on 5th October 1851 and Patritu (I assume Patrick?) on 19th October 1863 to the same parents.
I struggle to read the writing of the records. Does the Roots Ireland website translate it fully? What is the format of the entry - it looks like childs name, parents name, then are the second line entries like Godparents?
Thanks again for your assistance Roger, greatly appreciated.

The parish registers had no set format but generally you would see the name of the child, the name of the parents including the maiden name of the mother followed by the sponsors. Some parishes included the townland where the family lived.
