My great grandfather, Thomas Kavanagh, born 1834, married Mary Meagher ( Maher) in 1862 in Carrick-on- Suir. Mary was born in 1837 to William Meagher (maher?) & Anty Dunphy in Carrick-on-Suir.

They had 2 daughters- Mary (1863) & Anastasia (1864) in Ireland before emigrating to Queensland, Australia in 1860's. They settled in the area around Toowoomba where Patrick (1867), Helen (Ellen) (1869) and William (1870) were born. William was my grandfather.

At some stage in Australia, the spelling of their name changed to Cavanagh. Does anyone have any idea why this would be so?

It is possible that Thomas' father was David Kavanagh from Clonmel. I would love any information about the families of Thomas or Mary. Perhaps they had siblings who remained in Ireland or travelled to another country ?

Thank You

Roots Ireland has the Carrick on Suir RC records. I found five Meagher records in Carrick on Suir RC records from 1827-1847 where the father was William but I did not find a Mary. Also the wife's name did not start with an A.

Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers on line. I would look at the Carrick on Suir records at that time.

I also found the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Carrick civil parish. There was a William Meager listed on Main Street. Not sure if this is your William.
