Michael RYAN and Elizabeth (Eliza) (Bessie) DUNNE were married 16 Feb 1860 at Cappagh White and the Witnesses were Daniel RYAN and Margaret WHELAN. They had Sarah; Johanna; Mary; Patrick; Margaret Mary;Eliza; Johanna; born either Shanacluan or Cappagh White and Michael William (possibly born Limerick, Limerick but shown as Shanacluan in the Baptismal Record) ALL Baptised in Cappagh White between 1861-1873. Daniel Joseph was born 5 May 1878 at Redbank Plains via Ipswich, Queensland, Australia.

They arrived in Brisbane, Queensland aboard the "Clara" 22 Feb 1875

Redbank Plains was fairly sparsely populated and as most Irish migrants went either to family or those originally from their village, there is likely to be a connection to the already established Michael Ryan referred to in the Newspaper Article of the previous year.

QUEENSLAND TIMES - Redbank Plains-17 Feb 1874

Mr. Michael Ryan, next to Mr. Pitt, is the most extensive farmer on the plains; he

cultivates about seventy-six acres, seventy of which are under cotton, looking first-class. He has six acres

under sugar-cane, which looks remarkably well, and if Messers Rice do well with theirs this season he intends

to cultivate about forty acres next year. Mr. Ryan has a portable cotton gin, the gear on which he uses

for chalf-cutting and cracking corn, &c. He grows about five acres of lucerne, from which he obtained

about seven tons of excellent hay ; it is now ready for cutting a second time, and the crop seems even

heavier than the first. Mr. Ryan's homestead is an emblem of neatness, and a glance only satisfies the

observer that a due quota of prudence and frugalityhas been exercised in its formation.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Your Shanacloon townland was in Toem civil parish. I looked at the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Toem civil parish and there were likely 75 Ryan households in Toem parish and at least five were in Shanacloon. So trying to figure out which household was connected to the Michael Ryan who married in 1860 and how the other Michael Ryan was connected will be a very difficult task. Here is the Griffiths for the parish http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/tipperary/toem.htm

Here is the Cappawhite parish register  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0252

You may also want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Many thanks for your reply, Roger. I am sorry for the delay in replying, I have just found your Mail. I have had the Ancestry DNA test and found that I am mostly of Irish descent but have as yet only found descendants of my great-grandparents who came to Australia.

There were only ever around 600 people in Cappagh White but just to make things difficult a very large proportion of them were RYANS.

I will make good use of the Links that you include.

    Kind regards

Susan (I used my grandmother's name, Mary Lucy, when registering)

  • My husband's Great-grandmother was Julia Ryan, married Jeremiah O'Doherty in Solohead/Oola in 1886. Their two elest children were baptized in Anacarty and the younger three baptized in Cappawhite. Julia, Jeremiah and three of the children moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1908 but I am looking for information on their two remaining children, Edmund Doherty b. 1886 and Bridget Doherty, b. 1894. Also looking for more background on Ryans. Showing as sponsors for the children's baptisms are: Jeremiah Ryan, Ellen Ryan, Edmund Ryan, Margaret Ryan, Philip Doherty, Johanna Doherty, Edmond Doherty, Bridget Ryan, Morgan Ryan, Alice Ryan.
