My great-grandmother Mary A Maher was the daughter of a 'gentleman farmer' from Tipperary; she married Charles J. Spain, solicitor of Roscrea. My father recalls going to visit her brother (his great-uncle) at a 'mansion' about 10 miles south of Roscrea in the early 1920s. I am pretty sure this relative was Louis/Lewis S(tephen) Maher born at Bourney in 1856 to Martin Maher, son of Lewis Maher. L.S. Maher lived with his wife and family at Boolareagh in a large 'first-class' house with numerous out-offices and 'farmsteadings' according to the 1901 and 1911 census returns. It is the only house that big on the census page, and I would love to know whether anybody can identify it or tell me if it is still standing today. My father would be delighted if I found out!
