Some of the strongest of my DNA Matches on Ancestry.com (USA) are for the surname Kilmartin/Gilmartin. A William Gilmartin was a witness at the marriage of my g-grandparents Daniel Keary and Bridget Tracey at Bourney (Couraguneen) in 1855. A William Kilmartin is shown in Shanballyneagh(?) (Bourney) in the Griffiths Valuation. I assume that they are one and the same. I find no other census record for any Kilmartins in Bourney.  My DNA contacts believe that our connection may be through an Anna K(G)ilmartin who may have been born in Bourney. The contact traces her line to an Edward Kilmartin of Rahlety. Any help in finding a Kilmartin connection to the Kearys(Careys) or Traceys in Bourney will be appreciated. Also when (and their destination) the Kilmartins left Bourney is of interest. I also have had my DNA tested through 23and me. I am type R1b1b2a1a2f and my site name there is John Carey.

Thank you for all advice.

  • Clare,

Thanks,I think. A couple of questions.

    1. What, if anything is the difference between Bourney and Bournea? My, current interest is potential family ties to Ballynough (Couraguneen RC), Derrymore and Roscrea in the early to mid 1800's. Should I be amember of both Bourney and Bournea?

    2. When IrelandXO first started I joined Bourney and Roscrea sites.I post some inquires to those sites. I no longer see them. What happened to them?.

    Your guidance is appreciated.

    John

  • Hi John sorry for the delay in replying to you as I had problems joining. I have attached the Tithe Applotment records 1827 for Bourney, Killavinoge and Loughmore east. As you can see Michael and John are in Shanballynahagh and Behagloss both townlands are next to each other, meaning they had land in both. Patrick lived in Graffin Clonmore 3 to 4 miles from Shanballynahagh ( Couraguneen) William in Clonmore another mile on. All could have been brothers. James in Loughmore east another 2 to 5 miles depending on where they lived. All of these townlands are near one another. Also Loughmore only 5 miles from Thurles so easy to see how they could have come from Rahlety Thurles.

Regarding the difference between Bourney and Bournea is no difference as they are the same place/Parish. Bourney is the Church of Ireland and civil parish name / Bournea is the Roman Catholic parish name. On Ireland XO site they should be joined as one and they assure me this will be rectified in the near future. To make things more confusing we have two separate villages in the parish, Clonakenny and Couraguneen.

We called our club Bournea Reaching Out bourneareachingout@gmail.com and I hope that make it a bit clearer for you
