My research in Australia leads me to believe that my great-grandparents were John Marlin & Elizabeth Marlin (nee Leahy or Lahey or Leahey) who were born in the vicinity of Borrisokane in approx 1820 and that they were married there in approx 1845. On 28 July 1852 they, along with their 3 children (Bridget, aged 5; Catherine, aged 2; and John, an infant) boarded the barque "John Gray" as "Bounty Emigrants" and arrived Port Jackson (Sydney) on 25 November 1852.

I'm seeking any information concerning this family and their life in Ireland.

In Australia the family name became Marlan.

I am the great-grandson of John & Elizabeth (nee Leahy) Marlin who emigrated from Tipperary to Australia, arriving on 25 Nov 1852. They initially settled near Kiama in the Illawarra Region of what was then the Colony of New South Wales.

Do you know what the family name was before it was changed to Marlan?

  • I'm sorry if my original message wasn't clear - I believe that John's name in Ireland was Marlin and his wife's was Leahy or Lahey or Leahey; for whatever reason, they went by the surname Marlan in Australia (that was my mother's maiden name, as it was also her father's name).

Elizabeth Leahy, ( unable to make out Parish ) She was 30 years old. Father Michael and Mother Catherine.

Children all from Mothers parish on record.

  • Many thanks, Mairead.

Yes, I made a mistake - the infant on the "John Gray" was Thomas, not John.

I've checked the various references that you provided but found nothing further of relevance.

If you discover any remnants of the Marlin family (either current or historical) I will be most interested. Particularly if it points to somebody/somewhere that I can visit when I'm next in Ireland in April/May next year (2014).
