Winifred McDonagh died in a fire in Borrisokane workhouse on 3rd December 1904, with Mary McDonagh and Mary's infant child.

I have found several newspaper accounts of the fire, and know that an inquest was held. I hope to visit Ireland later this year, and wonder if anyone can advise me on whether the original records of the inquest would have survived, and if so where I could see them.

Also, are there any workhouse records for that period?

Very grateful for any help.

Mary

According to this link, Borrisokane workhouse records are held by Tipperary Studies:

  • Mary:

In addition to the link that Elwyn provided, I will alert our parish liaison for Borrisokane in case they are aware of other records.

  • Many thanks. I am hoping to find a record of Winifred's husband's name, to confirm (or deny) that she is "my" Winifred.

  • Hi Mary

Usually the records where they exist (in most cases the Board of Guardian Minutes) will reference events like this but it would be difficult to say if they name the parties involved. For example, in the case of children sent abroad from the Workhouse to live in Australia, the girls would not usually be named but reference perhaps made to the group as a whole. I would love to know if you find out any more as this is a really sad case and should be something that was recorded in the Minutes at the very least. Certainly contacting the Tipperary Studies Library Section will be of help though I don't know if there is an Archivist posted there or not. In any case the Librarian will be able to advise.

I would also suggest you call the Archivist on Duty at the National Archives in relation to the availability of inquest records: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-service/

    Best wishes

    Hi Mary

The records of the fire tragedy and the subsequent inquest are contained in The Nenagh Guardian archives, I have obtained those records and due to their nature would not like to publish here so you can either contact me via email at  ryan.bill1@gmail.com  or wait until you arrive in Ireland to view them at the Nenagh Guardian offices Summerhill Nenagh Co Tipperary.

I should warn that they do not  make for pleasant reading, I was unable to progress family history further but when you visit Ireland you might travel to "The Source" library Thurles Tipperary they have great records there including workhouse records

In the meanwhile keep this thread open on this site as the parish liasions for Borrisokane may wish to add to it

  • I visited Tipperary Studies in Thurles, where I was able to see the Board of Guardian minute books, but there was no information on the identity of the two women who died. I also looked at microfiche of the local newspaper, which had a few more details.

On a subsequent trip I went to the National Archives in Dublin, and they ordered a box of inquest reports for me (they are stored off-site). Unfortunately the report I wanted wasn't there. There were some references to the fire in the Chief Secretary's Office index, but the document referred to could not be found. Possibly it no longer exists.

In short, everyone I met was very helpful, but I didn't find the information I want.

Can I ask what your interest in this story is?

  • Hi Mary,
I just help as I am from the Borrisokane area. I live in wales now.
I did see a post in another site about the McDonagh family, it was Thomas McDonagh the guy was interested in.
My Uncle played for the Kilruane McDonagh's. You would have to read about Thomas.

I did search for the deaths but didn't see them which is very strange.
May I ask, did they live in Bawnmore?

  • Thanks for you help, Margot.

Yes, they are the deaths I am interested in. They didn't have any fixed residence, they were itinerant. But they were in Bawnmore for the 1901 census.

The child's death wasn't registered until 7 January 1905. I don't know the reason for the delay, but perhaps it was because there was no name for him in the workhouse records. One of the newspaper reports says that the women's husbands came to the workhouse a few days later, so they could have provided the child's name.

  • Hi Mary,
From the 1901 census they were from Co. Roscommon.
    Winnie was married to James.
    Mary was James' sister.
Arthur the father died in Roscommon a few years later. States a batchelor, no fixed address. It is the same guy as the 1901.
None on the births were registered in any county and I searched also for Unknown.
I noticed when Is searched McDonagh  tin* in 1911
Catherine married to a Gallagher, her brother Thomas was living with her.
I looked for the marriage and her father was James.
Have a look and confirm that this is Catherine she was only 15.

Such a sad tie for them.
