Hello,
My name is Chris Hughes. I live in Portugal but originally from Manchester, England. I have been researching for some time my maternal ancestry through my grandmother who was married to Matthew Clayson whose surname became anglicized from Gleeson when he came to Manchester in the early 1850s. Matthew's father was Thomas Gleeson who emigrated to Australia with his wife Ellen and family in 1854. They settled in Queensland.
I know Thomas' father was a MATTHEW GLEESON who came from Boherlahan parish and is mentioned in the Tithe Applotments 1827 for the Ballysheehan civil parish. I am fairly certain that Matthew was married to a Ellen Hefferan - info from TFHR and Australian death certificate. I am trying to find out if Matthew and Ellen had any other children apart from Thomas and any other information about living relatives and predecessors of Matthew in Boherlahan.
I am visiting Tipperary in October in pursuit of further information about my Irish ancestry. Would be very grateful for any information or suggestions,
Best wishes,
Chris Hughes

Chris:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The National Library of Ireland recently placed the RC parish registers online. Here is the link to Boherlahan Duallahttp://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0247 Records go back to 1810 so likely you can find records for your family.

Chris,
I checked the baptismal records for Boherlahan.. A Thomas Gleeson was baptised on 7th April 1810. His parents were Mat Gleeson and Ellen Gleeson. Ellen may very well have been nee Heffernan. Thomas was the only child attributed to them. The records start in 1810 so there may have been children born to them before records commenced.
Gleeson was not an unusual name in the parish. If you have any more information I may be able to sort out your query.

Hello Paddy,
Thank you for your reply.
In trying to trace Matthew Gleeson, are there any records of burials in the various cemeteries in the Boherlahan area?
Best wishes,
Chris

Hello Paddy,
Has there been a recently published directory of burials in the parish? Perhaps it may be of help in tracing any of my Gleeson family.
Best wishes
