My ancestor is Judith or Johanna Divane (called Devine in Australia) who married Patrick Dolan (called Dooling/Dowling in Australia) in 1827 in Boherlahan. He was from Cahir and baptised in Ballylooby. Johanna's parents were James Devine and Mary Dwyer (her death certificate 1887). They came to Australia in 1854.

A Peg Divane was a witness at their marriage and there are a number of other people with the same name in the marriage records from Boherlahan. As we have no birth or baptism records it is difficult to work out who might be her family. She was consumed by the families she and her children married into and I am just curious about who her family was and where they all went to because I don't think any of them came out here with her - the Dowlings all came and her daughter Mary Dowling married a Thomas Hackett also from Tipperary - Curragtarsna.

My sister and I had a little tour of the countryside last week that the families selected just north of Bendigo from 1860. We were absolutely astounded at the work that would have gone in to making the land ready for cropping and we decided it was lucky no one asked us to do it or it would still be forested. It does make for awe when we see what hardships our ancestors encountered.

  • Hi Margaret.  Devane is probably the name you are looking for.

    There were nine families of Devane's in Beherlahan/Dualla ,in civil parish of Ardmayle ,Barony Middlethird,Tipperary south riding, in Griffiths valuation 1850'S

  • Sorry Christina - nearly gave up the reply business - but.... have searched the Griffiths and going on the residence place on marriage of my Johanna Divane being Boherlahan I would think this would be the place in the records but who I am to wish it so!

    However, there are some names which may well be family connections so I will plug away at that - and thank you for the tip.

    I found the marriage record of Patrick Dolan and Jude Devane in the Boherlahan register. They were married on 27th February 1827 and the witnesses were William Devane and Peggy (Margaret) Devane.

    I searched the baptismal records for children of James Devane and Mary Dwyer but failed to find any. The register starts in 1810 so its likely that their children were born before that year.

    Devane families still survive in the parish today and they can trace their ancestry back to the beginning of the 19th century. You may be connected to them.

    Yes, it looks like they were born before 1810 - however I have searched the marriages around the 1827 mark and it would appear that the priest did it all on the one day and the people in the marriages might be all connected.  I have a spreadsheet I made of these and would love to know if we still have any relos there - none out here as far as Iknow.
