Hello, I am researching my Kennedy ancestors.  My great-grandfather, Matthew Kennedy, born about 1830, came to Australia from Toomevara in 1855.  His father was Thomas Kennedy and I think he was born about 1791 (I took this from his age in the English Census of 1851 - he and his wife and most of their children went to England about 1843 I think but they were back in Toomevara by the time Thomas died in 1864).

In the Tithe Applotment Books 1823-37, Mathew Kennedy is listed as living in Clonaleigh, Ballymackey, Tipperary in 1824-25. I think it is very likely that he was the father of Thomas, given the location, date and the Irish tradition of naming the first son after the father;s father (i.e., my great-grandfather Matthew, first son of Thomas, would be named for Thomas' father Mathew).

If anyone has any links to this family I would be very grateful for any information you can provide.

Thanks

Colleen Cartwright

Sorry for the slow response but my computer sent your message to my Junk Mail file and i jsut got around to clearing that - and there you were!

Michael Kennedy is not in my Tree anywhere but Matthew is - however, he was the son of Thomas Kennedy and Margaret Regan.  Although I found the baptisms of most of Thomas and Margaret's children were in the Toomevara parish records in Tipperary I did not find baptisms for the first three (Mary-Ann, Matthew or Bridget) in those records.  I have since found some information for Bridget (1826-1830), which I think is correct, that suggests she was baptised in Doon,  Limerick, so perhaps Mary-Anne (about 1826 - 28) & Matthew (about 1830-32) were baptised there as well.

I also found that Thomas and Margaret took most of their children to England.  They were there by about 1843 and the 1851 England Census has them living in the Wallsall Foreign Parish in Staffordshire England (except for Mary-Anne, Matthew & Ann).  However, they were back in Toomevara by the time Thomas died in 1864 (by which time Mary-Ann, Matthew, Bridget & Ann had migrated to Australia).

By that time Bridget had married Patrick Naylen/Naylon/Neylon (sometime between 1851 - 1855 in Ireland).

The search continues.  I appreciate any clues you may be able to provide.

    Regards

    Colleen
