  • Dear Sarah

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Do you know a broad time frame when John and Mary lived, if so ancestry.com, familysearch or rootsireland would be a good start. The reason I ask for a time frame is that there are a few Toohey entries on Griffith's Valuation (1847-18640, you can search here:

  • I am also decended from John Toohey and Mary Cahill (or Skahill). My great grand father was their only living child born in Ireland Stephen born probably in December 1929, most likely near Nenagh, Tipperary. John was sentenced to 7 years transportation along with his brother Michael and brother in law Patrick Hogan in March 1830. This was reported in both "The Clonmel Herald" and "The Tipperary Free Press" of 31 March 1830(attached). In the Irish Parish Records in the NLI in Nenagh | Microfilm 02484 / 03 on Page 34 June 1825 to October 1825 - the first entry on 11 June 1825 is for the marriage of Patrick Hogan to Margaret Toohey the witnnesses are recorded as Jn Toohey that Cudihy (??) & Mary Toohey see attached. Also attached extracts form National Archives Ireland - "Ireland - Australia Transportation Records" from pages which include references to Patrick Hogan - Margaret Toohy/Tooey and John Toohey/Toohy - Mary Skahill. Patrick and John in 1830 on "Andromeda" in 1830 and Margaret and Mary in 1835 on the Roslyn Castle, Mary and son Stephen arrived safely but Margaret and her children died during the voyage.

Like "Sarah" who sent the original request for information on John Toohey born 1801? and Mary Cahill born 1802?. I am also trying to find further information on them in particilular any details on the birth/baptism of Stephen in about 1829 and on John and Mary's birth marriage and parents, John's parents are believed to be William Toohey and  Mary Noon. Mary's parents are believed to be Jeremiah Cahill and Honarah Mooney.

Also if you could send my contact details to Sarah who originally requested information as I would appreciate if we could share information. I am Michael Toohey, a son Bernard  AloysiusToohey (1908-1984) b Jerrawa Creek, Dalton, NSW eldest son of Daniel Joseph Toohey (1870-1919)b Jerrawa Creek, Dalton, NSW son of Stephen Toohey(1829-1905) b Tipperray, Ireland eldest son of John Toohey (1801-1869) b Tipperray, Ireland.
