I'm interested in history generally and the family stories in particular - all the stories but especially the leaving Ireland to go half way round the world to a land so different from that of their birth and how those who styed behind fared.

Michael Murphy of Raheen, who died 3 September 1891 aged 60, was my GG Grandfather. His father was Thomas and he had at least one brother also called Thomas. I don’t know of other siblings or the name of his mother. He married Catherine (Kate) Condon (I have no information on Kate; she died possibly in 1875 or 1878, possibly giving birth to her youngest child). They had 12 children:

Edmond (Ned) (1861-?) – a Royal Irish Police sergeant in Cork, m Katie ? 1894; they had four children: Michael, Daniel, Kathleen and Eily.

Michael Joseph (1863-1929) – my great father, emigrated to Australia 1884, in 1892 m Bridgett Phillips from Cashel (emigrated to Oz 1886); 7 children

John (Jack) (?1864-?1945) farmer, in 1905 m Jane Murphy (b abt 1872), d Co Cork

Bridget (1864-1940) married James Morrissey 1902 and had at least two children: Honora and Kate

Patrick (1866-1945) priest, Co Waterford, at least 1901-1939.

Mary Anne (1867-1949) – migrated to Oz, date unknown

James (John) Francis (1869-1938) – a Christian Brother, migrated to Oz 1894

Catherine (Kate) (1870-1951) – migrated to Oz 1891

Johanna (1872-1892)

Maria (1874-) – possibly died at birth or in infancy

Andrew (1875-1949) – took over the Raheen family farm; in 1902 m Margaret ? (1878-1938), they had 3 children: Michael, Catherine & Mary.

Thomas (?-1942) – either oldest (b 1858) or youngest (b 1878) - gravestone states his age to be 64, hospital records 84; brewery worker, migrated to Australia date unknown; dnm.
