Hello! My great-grandmother, daughter of Thomas and Catherine, emigrated to the US about 1878 or so. She appears in the 1880 US Federal Census, living in Morristown, NJ USA where she settled with my great-grandfather, Patrick Doran, and raised their family.

I was in Ardfinnan many years ago, where the local parish priest very kindly wrote out baptismal certificates with official seals for Ellen and her siblings. I know Brigid and Thomas Jr. emigrated also and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Joseph stayed in Ireland, lost his first wife, then remarried. He worked as a coach driver at a local estate, and his wife was a servant in the household.

I would greatly appreciate any information any of you may have about this family. I feel so very connected to them. I have Ellen's trunk, the family bible, as well as small items of hers.

Thank you so much!!!

Debbie

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Roots Ireland has baptismal records for Ellen 1857 Jacob 1863 Bridget 1865 Maira 1867 Thomas 1875 I don't see a Joseph but maybe Jacob which is likely James   is Joseph?

Civil registration started in 1864 so I looked up the civil birth record for Thomas in 1875. See link below. Mother was Catherine Nugent. They lived in Lady's Abbey. I found a picture of Lady's Abbey.

I did not find Thomas or Catherine in the 1901 census and perhaps they were deceased. I did find Thomas Tobin living with the mother of Catherine Nugent living in Killyballygorman whihc is the location of Lady's Abbey.

Do you know where Joseph was living?

  • Hi Roger and Tom,

Thank you so much for all your help! I goofed! Ellen's brother's name was John, not James. It appears that Catherine and Thomas lost 3 children. Would someone born in Ardfinnan have a civil registration located in Thurles? Mary and John both stayed in Ireland, married, and I believe they died there. The 1901 census was such a help because now I know that 1. Thomas didn't leave Ireland until after 1901, and 2. Catherine Nugent's mother's name was Julia. These are big helps. And the Griffith's information is interesting because I wonder if my Thomas Sr.'s father's name was also Thomas since the valuation was done in 1853.

This organization is an incredible find and I truly appreciate all your help. One question, though. Is Lady's Abbey still standing?

Thanks for your comments about IRO. I believe Ardfinnan is in the Clogheen registration district. I will defer to my colleague, Tom, on the other questions.

  • Thank you again! I wasn't looking for twins, however you answered my question about a record I was looking at. Thanks again for the information on Lady's Abbey.

  • Not sure if related, I'm working on my Devereux family.  One of the girls (Bridget) married a Michael (?) Tobin.  So far I've found out they have 6 kids, Ellen Mary (signed letters Mary), Lena, Josey (Joe), Jacob, Michael, & Mel (?).  Have a letter Bridget wrote in 1909 from New Inn.
