I am researching my family - Thomas and Johanna (aka Judy) Fanning and their 8 children.

I have seen the typed transcripts of the church registers of St Stephens RC, Toomavera, Co Tipperary. Only four children were listed, subsequently the spelling was not consistent. - Eliza was recorded as Fannen baptised 26 Sept 1832; Mary as Fanane baptised 16 Jan 1835; residence Glenaguile Toomavera. Then Edward as Fanning baptised 1 May 1842 and Richard baptised 10 April 1847 as Fannen, residence Logg, Toomavera.

I have read the book The Famine clearance in Toomevara, County Tipperary by Helen O'Brien.

I have details of what I belieive is Johanna and three of her children arriving in Australia in1861 - the children were Edward, Judy and Michael. I know that Eliza and Thomas arrived. I descend from Eliza. I am of the opinion that Thomas (snr) and Richard may have died in Ireland. There is a widow Farran listed in Griffith's, but cannot find any other family by that spelling in Co Tipperary. Is it possible to have the original records of Griffith's looked at?

However my question is - the name LAGG appears on the maps of the Griffith's Valuation, however it is not listed in the Alphabetical Index of Townlands and Towns - etc. Was this an estate or was it a village?

I have googled Lagg and there is no record of such a place.

There is townland called Logg in the civil parish of Kilmore. That is too far away too be part of RC parish of Toomevara.

The civil parish for Toomevara is Aghnameadle and I worked out which civil parishes comprise the RC parish of Toomevara.

thank you for your attention.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You certainly have done a lot of research. let me give you a possibility. Many times on baptismal records, the priests would abbrievate or truncate a townland name. For example Ballyglass may be shown as B. Glass. There is a townland just to the northeast of Toomevara town called Laghile (in Aghnameadle parish). Glenaguile is about 8 kilometers south of Laghile. I'm wondering if the priest truncated Laghile to Lagg.

  • hello Roger,

many thanks for such a quick reply. Your suggestion is another thought.

It is difficult for me mentally guage the distances between townlands  and to understand it from the people over 150 years ago. Here my drive to town is about 8 kilometres and I do that in 10 minutes.

However I have the problem that there is LAGG noted on the parish maps from Griffiths in Glenaguile. Could it be a property that has now been absorbed by some other landowner?

I will certainly remember that priest practised shorthand even back then. However now back to recheck the parish registers on microfilm.

Thank you and have a wonderful Easter.

    cheers Suzanne

  • Hi Suzanne, If you google,  Fanning headstoness Ballycahill Graveyard co Tipperary,  there is an amazing amount of material re Fannings in the area.  It would appear they were all related.  With regard to townland called LAGG if  you are finding on Griffiths maps,  But  not enumerated on Griffiths.  I too have found such townlands  recorded as being addresses for baptisms of ancestors,.  I found some of those townlands named on the Tithes owned by the landlord only.best of luck with your research.

  • Hi Christina,

what wonderful people on Ireland reaching. Thank you for your advice, regarding townlands. Now back to have a look at the Tithe Applotments. however I think that Lagg might be an estate within the townland of Glenaguile. Another confusing issue is that there are two townlands call Glenaguile and they butt each other. The other one is in the civil parish of Latteragh. But first to the cemetery. Thank you, Cheers Suzanne

Thanks for your comments. Are you based in Tipperary? I don't see you on the parish liaison list. We get many Tipperary queries and I'd like to know where you are situated so I can refer messages to you for assistance. Thanks.

  •   Susanna   I am very excited to read about Joanna Fanning.  She is also my great grandmother.  I have the record of her marriage to Cornelious McDonald at St Patricks church in Albury in 1853.  Cornelious died, they had one son John McDonald who was my grandfather.  He was born at Woolshed in the Beechworth area but I have not been able to find record of his birth  Eliza subseqnetly married Richard Caine.  Mt father inherited a ruaal property from Edward Fanning.  I hope to hear from you so that we can follow all of these leads.   Kathleen Thomas WODONGA VUCTORIA
