Dear County Sligo Members,

My name is David Keane and I was born in Glasgow Scotland to John and Agnes Keane in 1971.

I understood from my late Father, that my Great Great Great Grandfather "Patrick Keane" hailed from Ireland and may have been born in County Sligo.

My late fathers belief matches my own research on our branch of the Keane family history, but the search grinds to a halt at Patrick.

I have a Scottish Birth Certificate for his son Michael, b 1846, which states Patrick was a Farmer, but I'm unsure if Patrick married in Ireland and moved, or moved and then married. This certificate is all I have as I cannot find any Birth, Census, Marriage or Death records for Patrick in Scotland.

I believe Patrick was born in the early 1800's, possibly around 1820, as I know he was married to Mary Reilly who was born c 1821. I know this becasue Mary was also on Michael's Birth Certificate and also listed as a Servant on an 1851 Census.

My research in Ireland has so far located only one Patrick Keane, Farmer, and it is on the '1749 Census Diocese of Elphin, Ireland. Parish:Kilmactranny Parish page 386', however the dates dont align.

As such, I would be grateful for any assitance or advice.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

David Keane

I looked at the Tithe Applotment listings www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie. for Co. Sligo and the only possible record that I located was a P.Keane in Gurtermone townland in Kilmacteige parish. ( Gortermone was a later spelling). The record was from 1825 which is probably too earlier for your Patrick. Only about 7 RC parishes in Sligo have records back to 1840 or earlier and I checked Roots Ireland  www.rootsireland.ie for a marriage record with no success. Reilly is a very common name in Ireland but is much more prevalent in Cavan and Meath. Only .5 percent of the Reilly's in the Griffiths were from Co. Sligo. I think a marriage in Scotland was more likely.
