Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has two 1807 baptismal records for a Patrick Haley in Co. Sligo. Possibly it is the same record twice. If you have his parents names, you may be able to confirm if either record pertains to your Patrick by working with the Roots indexes. The indexes are free but if you request a copy of a transcription of a church record, you have to pay around 5 euros.

  • Roger: So kind of you to reply. I had actually just found those records a couple weeks ago giving me the interest to try searching the Haley name again. I have been so frustrated with this line! I cannot find either Patrick or his wife's (Susan Talley) parents info.  Patrick would have been so young when he came to America finding him on passenger lists is unlikely specially when I don't know any of the names of the family. The two records you mention both list Aghanagh Parish but different parents. Cormack & Ellen Sherrin the other Michael & Maria  Carry.  I'm not sure how I'm going to tie them to Patrick. I'm not sure what you mean by working with the roots indexes. Would appreciate ANY help pointing me in the right direction. Patrick and Susan supposedly were married in New York City in 1830 but I can't find a marriage license. Thanks Tegwyn Haley Lantz.

When you have a name match, you can work with the indexes to determine the parish. ( Roots will not allow you to search parishes with just the surname.) After you have the parish, you can work with the fathers first name to figure out that name. It is tedious but it does work. Same with the name of the mother. In your case, I guess it is easier to just purchase the record.

I assume the 1900 death record does not show parents names?

  • Roger: unfortunately there are no death records. This is before the state required it to be reported in their database and Hardin County Ohio only has a record of when his son declared him unfit to handle his affairs. Patrick was active in the Catholic Church but they have been absolutely no help. Thanks for your input. I'll start with the Aghanagh parish where the 2 records you mentioned were and will keep my fingers crossed. Thanks

  • Hello
I read your message on the Ireland XO website and was wondering have you considered the possibility that the surname Halley may have been spelled Healy in Ireland before they left - as Halley is not very common while Healy is.
Also the mothers name of Talley is very unusual - could it be Tully?
Remember it is likely these people could not read or write when they emigrated and the record takers in the USA recorded what they heard - with the spelling taken by someone in orricgal office often becoming the spelling of the name from then on.
Have you the names of any siblings?

    Happy to help

    Kathleen
