I am searching for the parish that might have the church records from Killaspugbrone and Kilmacowen, also Sligo Cathedral parish for birth  records of my grandfather, James William Haran(1857-1863) and death record of my  great grandfather Hugh Haran (Harn) (approx 1890-1900) both lived on Coney Island

  • Hi James

There are 2 church baptism records of James Haran 1858 & 1855 on www.rootsireland.ie; the parish for both is KILMACTEIGUE RC.The site charges to view the full records.

No luck with Hugh's burial/death record; the only 2 Hugh Harans were 1655 Derry and 1871 Cavan.

You might want to have a look at the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 free online which have 59 Harans in Sligo.

  • Hiya Col, I hit "paydirt" with the Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37not for Hugh Haran but for Michael Haran who was Hugh's father. Michael would be my great great grandfather. He is on Garvey Island in the Killaspugbrone Parish in 1824. I've never ran across the name Garvey Island in my search before.

My question then is, where to look and  how to use this information to find either Hugh's, my grandfather's death record, or my grandfather James William birth record.

    Any ideas

Thanks, this is a great find.

  • Hi James

Good to hear that you had a 'hit'.

On www.rootsireland.ie/ there are 13 death/burial records for Haran in Sligo but none for Hugh Haran.

    http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=0&prevStartQuery=0

    They are: Martin 1798 age 21 Margaret 1799 73 Margaret 1805 79 ?? 1818 80 Anna 1827 65 Michael 1827 90 Bryan 1831 41 Margaret 1841 78 Ann 1833 75 John 1833 74 Mary 1838 70 Bridget 1840 70 Michael 1840 36. Most of them are buried in AHAMLISH RC Parish.

The only Hugh Haran death records are 1655 Derry (O'Haran) & 1871 Cavan.

If you click on Find My Parish on the top of this site page and enter Killaspugbrone there is an option to join that parish - maybe someone will know about your Harans.

  • Thanks Col, I'll give that a try. I'm still learning to use this website but more time spent on it helps. I'm going to check out the 2 birth records and also will sign on to the Killaspugbrone parish. I attempted that originally and thought I had but obvisously, not,  since I haven't had any communication from them.

With your assistance and help with the urls you keep sending me I feel like I'm actually  making progress again and am definitely narrowing down my search.

    I'll be in touch soon.

    Thanks again,

    James
