My 2nd great grandfather was Patrick Brennan. He was born 1 Mar between 1829 and 1833 in Sligo, Ireland. Family history is that his parents, James and Catherine (Stenson) Brennan, died when Patrick was a child. Someone took care of him for a couple of years and then he left for America in the early 1860's.
He traveled by himself, landing in Boston, Massachusetts. He married Bridgit Snee (of County Mayo) in 1864. They eventually settled in Minnesota.
I am looking for information on Patrick and his parents so that I can continue to trace these Irish roots.

I searched Roots Ireland and located an 1826 baptismal record in Co. Sligo for a Patrick Brennan with a father named James. However, neither Catherine or Stenson did not work so I presume this was another Patrick Brennan. There were no Patrick Brennans father James for the period 1827-1833. It is important to note that only 5 Sligo RC parishes have records back to 1830 on Roots.

I also checked the Tithe Applotment listings www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie and there were four James Brennan entries in Co. Sligo. Three of the four were in Ballysumaghan parish and the other in Kilmacowen parish. (The three in Ballysumaghan could have been one person with three land holdings.)

  • Hello
The name Stenson is/was common around the Easkey/Rathlee part of Co. Sligo and there were also Brennans in that area. I have been researching for someone who has Stensons in the family who emigrated to Canada - do you know what happened to Patrick Brennan in the USA?

Also Brennan is quite a common name in Sligo - also around the Tubbercurry area.

Happy to help if I can

    Kind regards

    Kathleen
