Hi, searching for any information about my great grandfather Dominick O'Donnell born in Roscommon approx 1873, moved to Derby in England don't know the date, but shown on 1901 census. Married Emma Rivers 1919 and died Jan 1936. We don't have any other information.
Thanks
Gemma

Gemma:
There are seven Dominick O'Donnell civil birth records in Co. Roscommon from 1869-1874. So we will need either parents names or possibly sibling names to narrow down the likely record. Can you get the 1919 marriage record?

Hi Roger,
Thank you for your reply. I'll have to see if I can source a marriage cert.

On marriage certificate my ggf is Dominic.
married 7/06/1919
Father's name on marriage certificate is Dominic O'Donnell a farmer who is deceased at time of marriage
I think there is a name of Hugh J O'Donnell as a witness.
Any information you have would be amazing

I can narrow down the possibilities to two using Dominick as the father's name. I also looked for a birth record for a Hugh O'Donnell with father Dominick but no record came up. Do either of the mother's names look familiar? Any other sibling names?
See seventh record for a Dominick O'Donnell born October 10 1872 father Dominick O'Donnell and mother Anne McManus. Family lived in the town of Boyle.
See eighth record for a Dominick O'Donnell born August 23 1874 father Dominick O'Donnell and mother Catherine Gallaher. They lived in Boghtiduff townland which is near the town of Ballaghaderreen.

Landholder. Technically, in 1874, that Dominick (and most farmers) were leaseholders. It was until 1900 and after that farmers were allowed to pruchase their land from the landlord.

This could be them then as on my ggf marriage cert his father was a farmer. Unfortunately I've no way of confirming this at the moment.
I can't find any reference for my ggf in England apart from the 1901 census in Derby, But he could have arrived anytime before then. I'm really enjoying seeking out the information though.
Thank you again for your help

Hello Roger,
I have recently made contact with a cousin in America who has given me some other names to check.
Martin O'Donnell and Mary (Margaret) Golden from Ballaghaderren ,County Roscommon Ireland.
My great grand father had three brothers Martin, Tom and John (I think) and two sisters Mary and Kathleen. A brother and sister from the Ryan family married a sister and brother my great grand father.
I am slightly confused as the marriage certificate I have for Dominic O'Donnell's marriage in 1919 lists his father as a Dominic too.
At the time of my Ggdad the farm went to the oldest son which was Martin who also had a son named Martin who was the last O'Donnell to live on the farm. The Regan brothers (three bachelor butchers) bought the farm.
There was also a cousin Evangeline Feeney.
I'd just like to try and confirm that is all correct!! If that's at all possible.
Regards Gemma

It took me awhile but I believe I have located your family. They apparently were very averse to civil registration because there are no civil records that I can locate. The other complication is that the surname O'Donnell was very common in the Ballaghaderreen area.
Parents were Dominick O'Donnell and Mary Giblin. They lived in Boghtaduff townland just outside of Ballaghaderreen.
On the subscription site Roots Ireland, I did not locate a marriage record. I did find baptismal records for the following children: Catherine baptized September 7 1856 Andrew October 8 1864 Martin November 2 1866 Mary July 2 1870 Dominick December 27 1872
Here is the link to the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0119 I can tell you from experience that there are missing records (1862-1863) and records out of order. Possibly you might find other siblings.
Boghtaduff had over 50 families in the 1901 and 1911 censuses and about ten were O'Donnell families. Possibly these two records are for your family.
1901 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Ballaghaderr…
1911 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Roscommon/Ballaghadere…
When did Martin take over the farm?

Hi Gemma,
Dominic O'Donnell was my great-grandfather as well. My grandmother was one of his daughters, Margaret. I was just googling to find more information about him and I found this thread. I don't have any information, but I'd love to chat with you sometime. I see this thread is from 2022 so I hope you see this.
all the best,
Maggie
