My GGrandmother, Ellen Brennan was married to Thomas Murtagh from Erra. Her parents were Luke Brennan and Mary ? She was born 1863 approx. I know she was buried in the old Catholic Killinvoy cemetery under John Brennan's gravestone. I don't know if that was her brother. Would anyone know if there is a listing of the people who have buried in this small cemetery? I would grately appreciate learning more of this family and if Thomas is buried there also.
Thank you for any assistance.

New York

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Below is a transcription of the civil marriage record from 1890 which also includes the names of the fathers of the bride and groom. Thomas was an RIC constable. I also found the transcription of her 1863 baptismal record in Knockcroghery RC church. Mother was Mary Kelly.
I located the family in the 1901 census in Co. Sligo. Thomas was in the Ballysadare RIC barrack. In 1911, Thomas was still a constable in Ballysadare.

I can't assist with the old Killinvoy cemetery. Perhaps you may want to e-mail the Knocjcroghery church,

Hi Roger, You are amazing. I have corresponded with you through the years of researching. And, thank you again for your assistance. I, too, looked into the church records now available, and thought that Mary Kelly is my GGGrandmother. But, Ellen had a sister, Beatrice, born 1880. I cannot find her in the church records. Also, Ellen had a sister, Catherine, who married Edward Naughton in 1909, I came across a posting from a relative of the Luke Brennan and Mary Kelly family. She has their death cards. In the posting she mentions that two girls, Katherine and Bridget go to California and are nuns. She has very detailed facts on the family. Now, I have doubts of Mary Kelly. There is another Luke Brennan and a Mary Lough. But, then again, I can't find Ellen or Beatrice. When I went to Ballymurray in 1999, I met up with the oldest resident in town. He was 92 and he knew my GGrandfather! Everything he said that day has been confirmed with research. He did mention my Ellen Brennan and was trying to remember if she was a Kelly Brennan. But, then he thought she might have come from Leitrim. So, now I am looking through every parish in Leitrim, thinking that if Mary was from Leitrim, then maybe she went back home to have her babies. I found that a common practice.
In that posting I mentioned above, there was a mention of a Seamus O'Brien, at the time, a student of Berkley. It mentioned that he went back home for a year to do research on the Brennan family and was in contact with the author of this posting. There was an e-mail for both of them. The author's was returned as not an active one, but, I didn't receive an error for Seamus. So, I am hoping he might shed light on which of the Luke Brennans is mine.
Again, Roger, I so appreciate your help. You might be interested in this story. After posting on Rootsweb in 2006, I came in contact with a distant relative that inherited my familys possessions. I flew to Ireland that weekend and now have my GGrandfather's RIC trunk with his name on it and a photo album of Ellen Brennan's! Most of the photos I don't know who they are, but I am hoping one day to learn.
Merry Christmas and God Bless you for you kindness. Always,
Mary

Hi Mary
If the Ellen Brennan - parents Luke & Mary Kelly - is definitely yours, then the couple named another, later child Ellen, which seems strange. You may already have their marriage details + the baptisms of their children, but just in case not, here they are ...

Hi
I so appreciate all your work. I did go through the church records and believed this Luke and Mary was mine. But the two Ellens didn't make sense to me. You now proved that this is NOT my family. THANK YOU. My Ellen was married and had my grandfather by the 1901 census. But this John might be the one that my GGrandmother is buried under. I am now going to read the link for the effects to John.
Thank you ever so much!

Catherine/Kate was born c 1875, so I wonder if this is her on the 1901 census, single, with father Luke, widower, & other siblings? (YOU WILL NOTE FROM ELLEN'S MARRIAGE TO MURTAGH THAT HER ADDRESS IS NOTED AS CORRIGEAN, PROBABLY THE SAME PLACE).

Finally, how do you know Ellen had a sister Beatrice, who was born c 1880?

-
Hi Again,
Tomorrow I am pulling out my Brennan bin with all my documents to see exactly what I have.
To answer your question, Beatrice moved to New York in 1907. She married Hugh Coyle before 1915 census. Can't locate their marriage record. They lived in Queens New York and never had any children. On their Naturalization papers Beatrice states that she was born in 1880 in Carrigeens, Roscommon. Still can't find their death records. I am not sure they died in New York.
When I went to Ireland for my GGrandfather's RIC trunk, I met cousins from Catherine Brennan, Ellen's sister. I didn't know of her until then. Catherine and Ed Naughton had two boys. One, Patrick died at a young age. The other had a Stephen and he was close to my GGrandparents. In fact, Stephen was present at both of their deaths. He is mentioned on their death records. All possessions were left to him when my Great Aunt died.
I will write tomorrow on what documents I have. I believe I might have Catherine's marriage records.
Thanks for all your help. It is greatly appreciated

Well, I pulled out my bin of the Brennan research. Now, looking through all the documents, I do not see one mention of a Mary. I think I must have assumed it was a Mary since there were two Lukes, really 4 in the area. I see that you and Roger had the church info in a typed form. Do you both have a database available to search? If so, would you be able to search for an Eleanora (Ellen Brennan) born to a Luke? I know that the gentleman that I met in 1999 said my Ellen could have been originally from Leitrim, but he was not sure. And about Beatrice. My uncle told me that Beatrice was Ellen's sister, but, maybe he was mistaken and she was just related. I know Beatrice married in the US around 1917, but cannot find their marriage record in the NY database. Maybe they got married in another state. I went through all the certificates I have. I have an Ellen Brennan, Patrick Murtagh and a Bridget Brennan witnessing two times each. Then a James Brennan, Joan Lough on others. Maybe my Luke was married to Mary Lough. But there is not James nor John born them. The gentleman that had my GGrandfather's RIC trunk said his father said they were related to the Brennans through Margaret Brennan marrying Matthew Lough in 1864. Maybe Margaret is Luke's brother. Geez, this is getting complicated. I am going to keep on researching. BTW, Beatrice stated on her naturalization record that she was born June 14, 1880 in Carrigeens, Roscommon. It was her husbands record so no maiden name listed. ;(

I have a subscription to Roots Ireland and I assume dancer1951 also has access to Roots. I did look up and Eleanor Brennan with a father Luke and the info was in my initial reply. Is this not the record you want?

Roger, As crazy it might seem, this Luke Brennan and Mary Kelly have another Eleanor Brennan in 1878. After seeing the posting by Kathleen Wilson in 2009, she has death cards for these parents and detailed info on the siblings. My Eleanor had a sister, Beatrice who went to US in 1907 and married Hugh Coyle. And also Ellen Brennan had a sister, Catherine who married a Ed Naughton in 1908, and stayed in Roscommon. I just sent a request for this marriage certificate to see if possibly a maiden name will be stated. Also, my Luke, I believe died in 1908. Kathleen's dies in 1902 and her Luke is on 1901 census with Ellen Brennan. Ellen was married to Thomas Murtagh by then. The only thing I am thinking is that sometimes people use their middle name. Maybe Beatrice was Eleanor Beatrice and used Beatrice as her name. That would explain her being on the 1901 census. Beatrice comes to the US in 1907. The first Eleanora might be mine. I am looking to find a connection to a Seamus who was a California student that came back to Roscommon to do his PhD on the Brennans in Roscommon. I put out an e-mail to him. Maybe I could find out which was mine. Thank you, again, Roger
