Looking for information on the family of my ggg grandfather, James William Stephenson, probably born about 1809.  His marriage record to Jane Acheson dated 17 Feb 1828 in Diocese of Elphin, Cavetown, Co. Roscommon, stated that he lived in Killoe, Co. Longford. They had a son also named James William Stephenson, born 21 Feb 1830. Apparently, the elder James Stephenson died and Jane Acheson Stephenson and her son James immigrated to the United States, residing with her Uncle George Acheson/Atchison in Clearfield Co., Pennsylvania.  In 1838, Jane married Lemuel Byers in Pennsylvania and had 10 more children.  A letter written to Jane by her father, James Acheson of Cavetown, Co. Roscommon, in Apr. 1839 stated  "poor Jas Stephenson's friends in the Cn Longford are doing badly.  His Uncle Wm lives in Drumlish - a cripple going on crutches."

Any help in locating the family of James Wm. Stephenson will be very much appreciated!

Sincerely,

Ann O'Rourke

  • I'm trying to cobble together a family tree for Stephenson's in Ulster circa 1800 to see if I can find some family connections for my line.

I did find an Eliza Stephenson, b 1815 in Rosscommon.  She married Robert Hanna and immigrated to New Brunswick Canada about 1832.  Perhaps a sister for your James William

    Good luck with your research,

    Julie.
