Hi Everyone,

I am researching the Fitzmaurice family in Roscommon county. My 3x greatgrandparents, Edward Fitzmaurice / Mary Lavin, emigrated to New Brunswick, Canada in 1832 with 5 of their 7 children. They left behind 2 adult sons, Edward, born 1817 in Killikin and Patrick, born unknown. I believe that Patrick is the Patrick Fitzmaurice that shows up in Cloonfad More in the 1858 property valuations. I have managed to trace some of this family line to Cllonfad More and Elphin. I would like to contact any that still live in Elphin, Cloonfad More, or the surrounding area or anyone that may have known this family. The family descends as follows:

1) Patrick Fitzmaurice, born ?

+Sarah May, born ?, married before 1837 somewhere around Carrick on Shannon. They lived in Cloonfad More by 1841. They had at least 3 children.

     2)Anna, born 21 Feb., 1844

     2)Patrick, born 23 Sept., 1841, Cloonfad More

+Brighid Cryan, born about 1850, her parents were John Cryan and Honora Kearney. Patrick and Brighid were married 10 Feb., 1873 in Killikin. They had 8 children, 7 still living in the 1911 census in Cloonfad More.

          3) Francis Patrick, born 8 March, 1875, Aughrim

          3) Mary Margaret, born 25March, 1877 Cloonfad More

          3) John, born 21 April, 1879, Cloonfad More

          3) Peter, born about 1882

          3) Honoria, born about 1885

          3) Thomas, born about 1888

          3) Michael, born about 1884

          3) Unknown

2)Francis, born 16 April 1837, Killikin, died 1872 Strokestown district.

+Ann Elizabeth Fagan, born 1833, her father was Michael Fagan. Francis and Ann were married 22 April, 1867 Strokestown district. They had 2 children.

         3) Mary Margaret, born 1869 in Roscommon county. she died before 1911. It's unknown if she ever married.

         3) Patrick J., born 2 Feb., 1870 in Roscommon county. He was still living in the 1911 census with his mother in Elphin.

This family shows up with Ann as the head in Elphin directories for 1870, 1881, and 1894. She is listed under General Merchant, Posting house, and Hotel. This family is listed in the 1901 and 1911 census in Elphin with Ann as a widow, and as a skopkeeper, hotel proprietor. Her son Patrick is living there as well as her sister Margaret J. Fagan, both listed as single in 1911. The daughter, Margaret j., born 1869, is not listed and the extra imfo on her mother lists her as having 2 children, 1 still living. There is also a death notice in the Freemans journal dated 3 July, 1896 for a miss M.A.Fagan who died 1 July, 1896 at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Fitzmaurice at the Hotel Elphin. (Perhaps this date is wrong or the notice is for the daughter of Ann, not the sister.)

I would appreciate any imfo.

Thank you,

Bernie FitzMaurice

  • Hello Bernie,my name is Tommy Flynn.I am doing my family tree on Ancestry but I have very little information on my great grandmother Margaret Fitzmaurice. She married my    great grandfather Anthony Scanlan in 1875.The marriage record I have says her home was Clonfad Roscommon and that her fathers name was Patrick. They had 7 children together.Do you think my great grandmother Margaret Fitzmaurice is related to you at all?-Regards Tommy Flynn

  • There are still Fitzmaurices living at Cloonfad, two brothers and their families. I don't know their e-mail addresses, but if you were to write (you know, with pen and paper) to Fitzmaurice, Cloonfad Avenue, Hillstreet, it will get to one or tother.

  • Hi Allan,

Thank you for the reply. I have managed to make contact with several distant cousins in Cloonfad More and elsewhere and they are all helping in this research. More keep popping up all the time.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Tommy Flynn,

There is a very good possibility that your Margaret could be part of my line. From some quick checks that I did it looks like Margaret and Anthony Scanlan lived in Kiltoghert which is just across the river from where my FitzMaurice's lived. I also have a Mary (could be Mary Margaret) FitzMaurice born about 1835 to Patrick FitzMaurice and Sarah May. Please contact me at my email, fitz1959@hotmail.com ,and we can swap some information and dig a little more.

    Thanks,

    Bernie
