From my experience, sometimes the church records have inexplicable gaps and possibly your John was part of a gap in 1864.

Civil registration started that year and your family would have been in the Castlereagh registration district. I did not find a record in 1864 for a John Concannon. The first record to show up in that area was a John Concannon in 1870.

If your Martin was born in 1837, there would be no church records because they started in 1839.

Hi Roger, thank you for taking time to look at my post, if you are right about the gap in church records then I have no chance of finding my John but I can't see that a catholic family would not have had him baptised when all his siblings were, can you? I got the name of Martins father from his death cert in Philadelphia and then searched for a John Concannon Kiltullagh the only one that came up in the Griffiths was John Concannon at 3 Meeltraun O'Flyn, Martin's marriage cert shows him living at Derrylehan which I think is very close to Meeltraun O'Flyn so I have assumed and I know I should'nt that the John in the Griffiths his his father as the Concannon's in Roscommon at the time were very thin on the ground so to speak not like Galway where there are many, I have a relative comming to Ireland in October do you think it would be worth a visit to the church in Ballinlough if not where do you think she should start to look?

Derrylahan is the townland immediately to the south of Meeltraun (O'Flyn).

The church visit is a good idea but I would contact them prior to the visit to make sure they are willing to assist.

You could try the neighbouring parish of Annagh (Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo) or (Dunmore, Co Galway) in case the mother came from one of these parishes and had John in her home - unusual but sometimes happened i.e. if she were having a difficult pregency.
