Greetings.  I am researching my Condren/Condron ancestors.  James Condren arrived in the US (state of Connecticut) in time to enlist in the American Civil War and listed his home as "Seven Churches" Ireland which I understand may be the Clocmacnois area.  His tombstone in Hartford County Connecticut from 1878 says he was a native of King's County which I understand is now Offaly.  He was born in or about 1840.

Is Condren/Condran a variant of Conran?

Children of James Condren, who married Mary Eloise Campbell of Williamstown, County Westmeath, in a Catholic chruch in Connecticut in 1868 included James F., Mary Ellen, Rose O., Anne Josephine, Margaret E., and Elizabeth A.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked Roots Ireland and there were many Conron/Conran/Condron baptismal records in the RC parish of Clonmacnois (21 from 1830-1842). I only located one record for a James in 1829. See trancription below. The Clonmacnose baptismal records have a gap between Auguest 1842 and February 1848 so if James was baptized in that gap period, no record will be available.

I assume you don't have his parents names. Are you aware of siblings?

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Thanks for your input Roger.  You are correct, I don't know the parents or any siblings of James.  His children included James F., Mary Ellen, Rose O., Anne Josephine, Margaret E. and Elizabeth A.  Perhaps one or more of those are family names.

Am I correct that Seven Churches would be in this parish?

I have done autosomal DNA testing.  My gedmatch # is A796548.

There could be a connection.  My ancestor, Kieran (Keron) Conran was born in Clonmacnoise on 1/2/1831.  I believe he had at least one brother, John, born in 1833.  Their parents were James Conran and Mary Temple, both of whom, I believe were born in 1812.  Kieran emigrated to the US in 1852 and also ended up in Hartford, CT.  He married Ann Muldoon in 1856.  They had 6 children, but only 2 survived childhood and only 1 had children, Francis Edward Conran, my great-grandfather.  I have more information re my family tree through Ancestry or if you want to reach out to me at pmconran1982@gmail.com, feel free.

  • Hi Patrick,

We may indeed connect.  I remember when I was tracking my James through Hartford city directories the name Kieran kept coming up.  I'll have to revisit.  Have you had DNA done?  My email is marnieka@comcast.net.  Do you know if you have any Flynn connections in Connecticut?  Thanks for reaching out.

  • So I guess that Condren, Condron, and Conran are all accepted variants of the same name?

  • Hi Patrick,

I checked and see you are a 5th-8th cousin match for both my mother and I on Ancestry DNA.  Are you on Gedmatch as well?

  • Gedmatch isn't ncessarily better...just different.  It allows you to upload your raw DNA information from Ancestry and compare it to everyone who has uploaded their DNA from Ancestry and any other DNA company.  Just another way to look at the data and look at it from a bigger pool of potential cousins.  You can check it out at gedmatch.com.  It's free to use.  I'm still trying to get a better understanding of how to interpret all the information.

  • Hi,

It's likely we are related somehow!!!!! I am so overwhelmed by this possiblility that I am having trouble staying focused!!!!   In my rush to respond, I might get some facts confused, but we can straighten any errors out later.

My paternal grandfather was Martin Condron, born in Clonfanlough, Co. Offaly in 1882 and died in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1973.

His parents, my great-grandparents, were Patrick Condron (1847-1915) and Ellen Shea (1851-1932).

Patrick Condron's parents (my great-great-grandparents) grandparents were James Condron and Margaret Couglin.  James was first married to  Mary Templeton Macnoise, who died young.   His second wife, Margaret Coughlin, was my great-great-grandmother.

We believe that several of Patrick's siblings emigrated to the USA and died there including 2 or maybe 3 sisters and maybe his brother James .   We were able to find a death notice for James in a Hartford, Conn. newspaper,  but so far don't have conclusive evidence that he was Patrick's brother.    The James we found did have children, but we haven't researched them yet.

When my grandfather, Martin, first came to the US he briefly lived with his aunt Anne (Shea) Sheehan and her husband James Sheehan in New York City.   He then moved to Hartford, Connecticut for several years before moving to Boston with his wife Ellen (Henson) Condron of Bunnahinly, Co. Westmeath.

Well, that's all for now.  Looking forward to working on this jigsaw puzzle together!

  • I am very busy with work and unfortunately do not have much time to review your info in the next couple of weeks, but I will do my best.  Have you done dna testing?  Marnieka and I confirmed that we are in fact related through such testing, which is very cool.  I wonder if James Condron and Mary Templeton Macnoise are the same as my James Conran and Mary Temple. I believe they were born in 1812.  It makes sense that the James Condron who lived in Hartford, CT is likely your great-grandparent, Patrick's, brother.  I did the dna test through Ancestry.com.  Good luck.  I can be reached directly through pmconran1982@gmail.com.

  • Hi Patrick,

Thanks so very much for your prompt reply!   No need to rush to look at my information!  Fortunately, I am retired so I have a bit more free time than you do, but every new project takes a significant amount of time.  I've been in touch with other distant relatives and still owe them answers, so I understand your situation very well.   My sister and my brother and I have all had our DNA tested by Ancestry.com.  I will email info about our tree.   I immediately suspected that we could be related when I saw the reference to James Conran and Mary Temple.   It seems quite likely that the James Condron and Mary Templeton Macnoise I've heard of are one and the same.  For now, I will work on making sense of everything so I can provide you with better information at some point.  Right now, I'm quite content that we have at least made contact!  My email address is teatime1948@msn.com.

  • Hi Kathy!  And hello again Cousin Patrick.  This is exciting!  I've been off genealogy for awhile because my work demands so much computer time that I can hardly stand to look at a screen in my free time, but I'm very happy to hear from you, Kathy.  It will be great if we can firm up this connection.  I'm traveling right now and don't have access to much.  Are you willing to share your DNA kit numbers, Kathy?   Also, a lot of my Condrons in the Hartford area are buried in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery.  I wonder if yours are there too?

  • Hi Marnie, It's great to hear from you! It's funny that you mention Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery because my grandmother's side is all buried there!     We are quite sure that my grandmother and grandfather, Ellen (Henson) and Martin Condron, met and married in Hartford, but we haven't been able to find documentation online.   Ellen came from a family of 14 and it seems that the siblings who emigrated here settled in Hartford.   For reasons unknown, my grandparents moved to Boston after a few years, but many of my grandmother's siblings lived out their lives in Hartford.   We have obits from newspapers.com for many of them, and would be happy to share them if you're interested.   I would also be happy to share my DNA kit number, but I'm not sure what that is - can you let me know how to find it? As mentioned in my first post, we know that 2  of my grandfather's Condron aunts also emigrated to the USA and we suspect that his uncle James Condron did too.   We have an obit for a James Condron which I can't find at the moment, but will send it along when I find it.  Looking forward to sharing information with you!  Thanks for getting in touch!

    Hi Kathy and Patrick,

Here is some information I have pulled together from Hartford City Directories plus a few random obituaries.  I hardly know how to make sense of it.  I'd love for other eyes to take a look at it.  I think that James Condron who is the gardener is my direct ancestor.

  • It is clearly not a coincidence that James Condron worked as a gardener and lived at 30 Wethersfield Ave.  That address is a part of Samuel Colt's home and my 2nd great grandfather, Kieran ("Keron") also lived at that address and worked as a gardener for Mr. Colt before he became the superintendent of the Charter Oak Park, a harness racing track.  Therefore, John Condron, is likely also related, and presumably Kieran's brother, as Kieran had a brother, John, born in 1833 in Clonmacnoise.

  • I'm afraid I can't shed much light on this theory, but it seems quite reasonable.   I had started to consolidate the city directory info that Marnie sent but got side-tracked.   Will make another stab at it tonight or tomorrow.

  • I've confused myself again.  As I was reading Patrick's last post I was reading "John" but thinking of "James".  Do we have any evidence that James is a brother of Keron and John, other than James also being a gardener for the Colts and living with Keron?  I suppose they could be brothers or cousins or uncle/nephew?  I love, love, love the picture of Keron in the obit, along with the details about the horses!  Oh how I wish I had a picture of James.

  • HI Marnie and Patrick,

Do you know how to check our to see if we are DNA matches?   I'm a member of Ancestry.com so I can invite you to view my DNA via Ancestry.com, but I don't know how to search for you on ancestry.    As of now, I can't figure out how to get back to a common Condron ancester.   My sister and I thought that our great-great grandfather James was born in 1929 and thought that he might be the man that Roger McDonnell identified in an earlier response to Marnie.  However, we have James's mother as Bridget Kenny, whereas Roger has her listed at Bridget Larkin.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Marnie and Patrick,

I might have the wrong James Condron, as I think I may have looked in the wrong parish for his baptismal record.   What I know for sure is that my great-great grandfather was James Condron, but I need to do more research to see if I can confirm his baptism record or not.   Sorry for the confusion.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Marnie and Patrick,

I took the file that Marnie provided and sorted by first name, address, year, and occupation.   My goal was to narrow done the number of people we're dealing with.   This seemed to be the best way to sort because it was pretty clear who had lived at the same address year to year.   It's not perfect though and ends up with some odd results for the year sort, but in general it seems pretty useful.   Haven't tried to make complete sense of it and you probably don't have time to do that either.  However, maybe it will come in handy at some point.  I've attached a pdf file.  I also have an Excel file, but it wouldn't allow me to upload it.  I will send both file formats via email.

  • Hi Marnie, Kathy C and Patrick:

It sounds as if you are making a connection with one another and congratulations with that!  If you would like to share your Condrons through the XO Chronicles (tab at the top right of the page), on our Ancestor Profiles, that would be great, and it would also be a place where you can continue to collaborate with one another.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

    All the best,

  • Hi Marnie,

I'm starting to suspect (hope?) that your ancestor James Condren may be the brother of my great-grandfather Patrick Condron.   In an earlier post you mentioned that James was born around 1840.  I'm pretty certain that my great-grand father Patrick Condron was born in 1947, so he and James could definitely have been siblings.     The only other clue that I have is that my grand-aunt Annie Condron Ward mentioned in a taped interview that her father Patrick had a brother James who went to the U.S.    Because of Annie's age at the time and the fact that she confused some other facts during the interview, I'm not 100% sure that her Uncle James did actually emigrate to the US.  I hold out hope that ,some day, you or will make some miraculous discovery which will prove or disprove my theory.

  • I keep hoping these guys will come haunt me one night so I can ask them some questions about the family tree and about their lives!  (My husband thinks I'm crazy).  My James Condron came from Ireland and joined the Union army very quickly it seems.  Perhaps they were recruiting soldiers in Ireland?  I'm still hopeful we'll get this all figured out sometime.
