My great-grandmother, Rose (Rosannah) McKENNA was the first-born child of Edward McKenna (b.1837 in Co. Monaghan) and Mary BRADY McKenna (b. 1846, probably in Co. Monaghan) Rose was born (or baptised) on 25 Aug 1866 in Scotstown, Monaghan. We know Edward's parents were Edward Sr. and Mary Kelley McKenna, but nothing more is known of Mary before her emigration in 1868 with Rose, to Liverpool, and then to America. Edward apparently emigrated before Rose, but no record has been found of his passage. Around the same time, Edward's sister, Rosa McKenna MALLEN and her husband, Hugh, his siblings and mother left Ireland and all settled in the area of Plattsburg, Clinton County, Missouri.
If anyone has any connection or information on these families, please contact me.
Thank you!

  • hi,

Researching the McKENNA family in Monaghan is very difficult without a Townland name.

There were/are a lot of McKENNAs in the area.

My g-grandmother was Roseanne McKENNA eldest daughter of James Thomas McKENNA b.1840.

The eldest daughter was usually named after the Mothers Mother.

You would need to get a Birth certificate for Roseannah from Roscommon, which would show the Parents Townland.

There are no official records for Catholics before 1864 in Ireland on ly Church records.

But it looks like you struck lucky and this looks like Rosannah's birth record.

    Name:     Rosannah Mckenna
    Birth Date:     25 Aug 1866
    Birthplace:     0303,SCOTSTOWN,MONAGHAN,IRELAND
    Father's Name:     Edward Mckenna
    Mother's Name:     Mary Brady
    Indexing Project (Batch) Number:     C70129-4
    System Origin:     Ireland-ODM
    GS Film number:     101132

I would get a copy of the Birth cert. and then post the name of the Townland.

    Regards,
