I am searching for details of a William Porter who left Monaghan, Ireland for India in 1805. He was 19 years old when he left, having joined a British army regiment (Jan 1805) and was sent to India arriving there (Madras) in July 1805. His army records state he came from Newbliss, Monaghan. Newbliss could have been where the recruiting station was (perhaps fair-day) when he joined and might have traveled there from Clones or Killiveen or surrounding townlands.

I know this is a long-shot but perhaps their is a reference out there.

Thanks Col for your reply. I never thought this would be an easy search, recognising the distant time being researched. Also, given that people in the early 19c did not venture too far from their home because they would have to walk, I think he came either from Newbliss or a neighbouring townland. From my research, the largest (only) estate in Newbliss was the Kerr estate, however their records of tenant land holders does not show a Porter. Further research might provide sub-tenants but difficult to see where any records might be. Anyhow Newbliss is on his record so that is a good focal point.

    Thanks again.
