Hello,
I'm researching the Carney surname. John Carney (my great, great grandfather) was born in Clones, Fermanagh in 1823. He imigrated to Canada, and eventually settled in Maine USA where he married Mary E. Jones. I believe his father's name was James. I can't seem to find any more information about the Irish side of my family.
I would appreciate any help.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I assume John and his family were RC. The baptismal records for the RC parish of Clones do not begin until 1848 although marriage records start in 1821.
I checked the 1860 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clones civil parish in Fermanagh and there were no Carney/Kearney records ( I was looking for the father). However, the Clones parish in Co. Monaghan did have Carney and Kearney records http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/monaghan/clones.htm
The two parishes border each other.
You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing and possibly you will match someone with Carney connections in Ireland.

HI Roger,
Thank you for your response and research. I'm actually not sure if the Carney's in my family were RC. My grandmother Iza Carney belonged to a Prodestant Church, but I'm not sure about her ancestors furthur back.
I've had DNA testing done through 23andMe, but never thought to look for the Carney name, so thanks for that suggestion.
Thanks again!
Margaret
