Hello from Canada

I am looking for ancestors of my Armstrong/Byers who came to Canada in 1912.

My research thus far suggests the Armstrongs came from Tiernahinch and the Byers(Beers) family came from Fermoyle, Scotstown.

The furtherest I have gone back on the Armstrong family is Joseph Armstrong (b abt 1835) married to Mary Dixon (b abt 1842) on 28 May 1861 in Drummully. I think Joseph's parents maybe James Armstrong and Anne Jane Jackson but I have no definitive proof. I believe Mary's parents are John Dixon and Sarah (surname unknown).

The furtherest I have gotten on the Byers (aka Beers) family is John Beers (b abt 1837) married Susannah Wiggett (nee Graham) (b 1828) on 2 Nov 1860 in Church of Clough, Clough. John's father's name is also John, mother unknown.

Susannah's father was Hugh Graham (b abt 1785) married to Mary Simple (b abt 1784).

Any information on any of these families would be greatly appreciated.

I would also appreciate suggestions on how I could further my research. Thus far, I have accessed RootsIreland.ie, Ancestry, Irishgenealogy,ie, RootsIreland.ie, Findmypast, PRONI, FamilySearch, Nationalarchives.ie.

The families were Protestant so the newly revised Catholic records are of no help.

Cheers, Linda from Surrey, BC, Canada

  • Hi Linda

Have you had a look at the Early Birth and Marriage Index? It would be a good idea to keep an eye on it as it is updated regularly. If your ancestors do not appear now they may at some point in the future. You can search the Index for free. The Clogher Heritage Society also have a website and a Journal that you may find interesting. Some editions of the journal make reference to Extracts from the 1821 Census, a Clones Rent Roll etc

    Best wishes
