My Great Great Grandmother was born in Ballybay in 1868.  Her name was Catherine Meighan.  Her father was called Owen and her mother Mary, although I'm not sure of Mary's surname.  I am trying to trace Owen's parents or any of his other extended family.  He was born in 1825 and some of my sources say he was also born in Ballybay but others say it was Carrickaduff.  Can you help me?

many thanks

  • Hi Jacqui

No luck with Catherine's birth/baptism record on www.rootsireland.ie/

There are 3 but they are 1846, 1862 & 1863 but none has father Owen

    http://monaghan.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y

There are 4 Owen records but the earliest is 1841; the only 1 with the exact spelling is 1855

The parish of the 1855 is Carrickmacross RC; Ballybay is not in the list of parishes

  • If your experience is anything like my own, it will be difficult if not impossible to trace anything that happened before 1864. My g-mother was born in 1877 and I was finally able to track down her  birth certificate; ditto the marriage certificate for her parents. But that is where the trail ends. And absent your grandmother's townland, the search will hit a stone wall fast. But even if you know it (or the name of her street in Ballybay town), the task is not easy. Good luck.

  • Griffiths Valuation shows an Owen Meehan in Coolfore Townland, Magheross Parish in 1861.  Next farm is occupied by Catherine Ward...perhaps your Catherine was named after her?...possible.  There is also an Owen Ward.

There are Owen Meehans also in:

Killylough, Tedavnet; Knockcor, Tedavnet; Drumgowna, Magheross; Coolreagh, Killanny; Donaghmoyne, Donaghmoyne.  The Tedavnet ones are north of Monaghan town, the others are near to Carrickmacross which is only about 10 mi. from Carrickaduff.

The Tithe Applotments also show an Owen Meighan in Coolfore Townland in 1823, as is Bryan Meighan.  Peter and Thomas Ward are also in the townland.  The Catherine Ward of Griffiths was likely married to one of them.

Other Owen Meehan/Meighans in the Tithes:

    Drumguil, Drumsnat; Drumquill, Clontibret;

1901 census for Coolfore shows Bernard Meehan, age 70, with family.

There was an Owen Meighan who died in Co. Monaghan in 1877 age 65.  Also, an Owen Meehan who died in 1883 age 63.

    Is this your family here?:

  • Hi

That is my Catherine, I have that information from the 1881 census, but this is where I get lost.  However, reading through your email and checking my notes, Catherine may have been born in Carrickaduff rather than Ballybay.  I know her sister Bridget was born in Ballybay.

I can't get any other info from family as anyone that may remember unfortunately is no longer with us.

    Thanks for the help

  • Hi Jacqui

My own Meehan family are from just outside Clones, Co. Monaghan (between Smithboro and Clones) and there are quite a few of the Meehan name around Monaghan as I have discovered! It can be very confusing.

Clogher Historical Society has a website that you might be interested in looking at. If there are no parish/civil records available though, you won't be any the wiser no matter what site you use. However there may be local sources that they know about. Sometimes local historical societies publish journals that can be useful too:
