I'm looking for records or relatives of my great grandmother, Alice P. Markey b. December 12, 1859 to Thomas Markey (1830-1918) and Mary McKabe/McCabe (1832-1909). Sister of Alice was Mary Margaret Markey b. May 20, 1852. Brother of Alice and Mary was Peter, no dates known. Mary married Patrick McGinn and they emigrated to the United States in 1880, settling in Nebraska. Alice was said to accompany them, but I don't see her name on the passenger list. She was married in Nebraska in 1881 to Charles O'Neill, b. Wisconsin, USA.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I chekced Roots Ireland and was unable to find a baptismal record for Alice. After doing some checking, they lived in Clontibret civil parish and the RC parish was Clontibret which is just to the west of Castleblaynet RC parish. Unfortunately, baptismal records for that parish start in October 1860 which explains why the record was not on Roots.  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0298

The 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clontibret parish does show many Markeys in the parish including a Thomas in Corderryduff. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/monaghan/clontibret.htm

I checked the 1901 census and there were no Markeys in Corderryduff.

  • The only Markey farm in Corderryduff in the tithes in 1830 was another Thomas, so I’d guess that was the father of Thos born c 1830. Then it was a 5 acre farm.

As Roger has said, Thomas’s farm is listed in Griffiths Valuation of 1861. He had plot 10 which was a 9 acre farm.

This looks to be your family in 1901 & 1911:

I was incorrect. Thomas and Mary were in the 1901 census for Corderryduff. The surname has been erroneously transcribed as Mackey. Living with son Daniel. Mary died between 1901 and 1911. Thomas was living with Daniel and family in 1911. Thomas died in 1918 and Mary likely died in 1909. See below.

  • I'm sorry, but I have no records from Ireland other than what you see above in my query and the responses received. You might take a look at the family tree of Pat McGinn and Mary Margaret Markey (above) for clues. I think it's on Ancestry.com, but I don't subscribe and haven't checked it lately for recent additions.
