Several of my ancestors were from County Monaghan.

Mary McGuire(not sure of spelling as I have several variations) born 1778. Her parents were Constantine McGuire born in 1750 and Bridget Newman born in1754.

Mary McGuire followed her husband  William Smith, a weaver by trade, born in1786 in Co. Cavan to Australia in 1826 with her surviving children, Ann (Nancy), Mary, Catherine and James McGuire Smith. Her husband was sententenced to transportation to NSW, Australia after protesting against the English. He arrived in 1821.

James McGuire Smith is my third greatgrandfather. He was born in Co. Fermanagh on1/3/1809.

I would appreciate any further information about my ancestors.

Thank you

Anna Cooper

  • Anna:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, it will be difficult to find information on your family. I presume your family was RC and if so none of the RC churches in Co. Monaghan have records prior to 1825. I also checked for a James Smith baptism in 1809 in Co. Fermanagh and got no record. The same situation exists in that no RC parishes in Fermanagh go back that far.

If your ancestors were other than RC, let me know.

  • I am also related to the Smiths and McGuires, being descended from Ann, who was born in Co. Cavan I believe.  They were RC.
