Looking for Thomas Hand/Hann and parents, he was born about 1815 and almost certainly Lobinstown as it was then. He married Jane Miller in 1836 at Lobinstown and had 5 children there then moved to Dublin. Jane was born in 1819 at Drumconrath. It has been mentioned that some of the Hand family were COI and converted to Catholics in later life and Lobistown used to be Siddan. Are there any Siddan records still available, on line preferably as being in Australia cannot visit Irish research centres. Have found his children and marriage on Irish Genealogy and RootsIreland Thank you, Eddie

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.  The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf

Most Catholic records are held locally - here is a link to what is available and where/if it can be viewed:

  • I have updates on the Syddan Church of Ireland records regarding Hann/Hand family.

Just wondering if Edward is still subscribed ?

In summary I have found numerous births/marriages/burials for Hann family in Syddan in records going back to mid 1720s having visited the RCBL library in Dublin a week ago.

  • Hi Liam,

I have gone through the records which I extracted for Lobinstown RC parish using rootsireland some years ago. I have not found any records for the birth of Margaret to Thomas Hann and Jane nee Miller. However, I have found their marriage record on the Lobinstown marriage register as well as two children born with quite a gap of time between them. So, I strongly suspect that Margaret was indeed born to this Siddan/Lobinstown based couple and that your information is likely correct that they subsequently moved to Dublin. Regarding Margaret Hann who married Thomas Gibney (a cooper) I have found Margaret Gibney death record for 1895 on the civil records at irishgenealogy.ie showing that she was a widow to a cooper and that daughter Mary Gibney was a witness. Her stated age then was 44 yrs of age at 1895. She resided at Cork Street in Dublin's Liberties area at that time.

Thomas Hand and Jane Miller were married on 28 April 1836 in Lobinstown RC church. (note the records oscillate a bit between aHann and Hand spelling but the original family name was generally listed as Hann)

Anne Hann was baptised 27 Nov 1836 to Thomas Hann and Jane Hann (nee Miller)

Catherine Hann was baptised 16 April 1847 to Thomas Hann and Jane Hann (nee Miller)

    other Lobinstown RC records:

Patrick Hann married Jane Duffy , 29 Oct 1840 Lobinstown RC.

Anthony Hann baptised at Lobinstown RC 7 Jun 1845 - Father : George Hann, Mother : Mrs Hann (noted on register that mother is an adult convert to the Catholic religion and that the child was baptised conditionally).

Anthony Hann baptised 6 Jan 1850 at Lobinstown RC , Father: George Hann, mother : Bridget Martin noted that Anthony Hann is an adult convert to the Catholiic religion

Mary Hann baptised 21 Mar 1848 Lobinstown RC, Father: Anthony Hann , Mother : Elizabeth Abraham

Also I have numerous records for this family from the Siddan COI church dating back to the 1720s. Their main homestead appeared to be in a townland called Devinstown. The records on the RC parish clearly show there was a conversion to RC religion. Also I have strong reason to believe that a man named Owen Hann who was a retailer/grocer/publican in Ardee town in Co Louth, and listed as born in Meath was connected to this family. He is listed on the 1901 and 1911 Irish census as well as on several town business registers in the late 1890s, early 1900s, etc.

I can try to pull together those records for you shortly , if they are of interest.
It looks like Thomas Hann who moved to Dublin was most likely a son of a George Hann or an Anthony Hann (senior). I am not to be knowledge related in any direct way to this family but my interest stems from a discussion with a man who is quite possibly a relative on my Little side who had an interesting lore told to him about Hanns who lived near Ardee (Siddan would indeed qualify) who may have had a much earlier German origin. I have done some speculative research on that and I have some dotted lines which could add a bit of weight to that. With that in mind I am interested to know if there are any living descendants who have any histories passed down by this family regarding possible older origins.

  • Just to also add that there is a record for a John Hand, aged 49 on the 1901 Census residing with family at Anne Street North and listed as a Brewery labourer along with his son (also a John Hand) , another son , Anthony and his wife Catherine.

John senior is listed as being specifically from Lobinstown Meath (by clicking on more information). His wife listed as from Ardee, Louth. Without any doubts this John Hand is closely connected to the same Hann family from Lobinstown/Siddan. He is possibly a sibling of Thomas Hann who married Jane Miller (or a first cousin, nephew, etc).

  • More in keeping with the first enquiry , regarding Thomas Hann who subsequently married Jane Miller.

From the Siddan COI register which I obtained access to at the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin.

1814 No 2 February 19th Baptised in the parish of Killary, "Thomas" son of Anthony Hann of Devonstown and his wife Mary . born 18th, Inst B.Disney.

    and

1803 Married (by License) Anthony Hann of Devonstown to Mary Collin of Footstown , Parish of Syddan,

    Dec 23 - B Disney Vicar

1810 , No 1. Mar 25th Baptised in the parish of Killary, "Anthony " son of Anthony Hann of Devonstown and

Mary Hann (alias Callon) his wife. born 23th, by B.Disney

1812 , No 4, May 4 Baptised in the parish of Killary, "James" son of Anthony Hann of Devonstown and Mary Hann (alias Callon) his wife. born May 1st - B. Disney

I would venture that Thomas' mother was Callon or Callan as opposed to Collin.

and regarding Thomas and his siblings we have a joint confirmation which occurred in 1822

Confrirmation at Drumcondra, by the Lord Bishop of Meath, 14 October 1822.

George Hann , James Hann, Thomas Hann, Anthony Hann. - George Hardman - Minister

The vicar B.Disney is most likely Brabazon Disney who also had ministry in Louth at other times.

  • Hi Liam,

I should have a chance during the week to check my records on the Hann family from the RC/Lobinstown registers and the Siddan COI registers (which I transcribed at RCBL)

I am originally from Dublin and now West of Ireland. I have no known directions to the Hann/Hands except that our Little family had roots in mid-Louth including areas close to Ardee , north of Siddan/Lobinstown but in the Louth county bounds. A gentleman who is quite likely a distant relative on my Little side has heard a very interesting anecdote about a possible connection between the two families. That's really why I've been doing some peripheral research on the Hann/Hands.

  • I am delighted to say that I have managed to tidy up my notes taken over 3 years ago at the Representative Church Body of Ireland near Churchtown, Dublin. They are my transcriptions of Hann birth/marriages/deaths and include confirmation notes for family members. Regarding the central individual to this discussion, namely Thomas Hann who married Jane Miller I have been able to establish now his baptism date as well as his parent's names and marriage record. Thomas Hann was baptised on 19 Feb 1814 at Syddan COI parish, a son to Anthony Hann of Devonstown (townland within Syddan/Lobinstown parish boundaries). Based on an earlier marrage record it appears that Thomas' mother was Mary Hann nee "Callon" of Footstown within Syddan parish. Anthony Hann and Mary Callon were married (by license) 1803 at Syddan.

Based on a list of protestant parishioners around Meath compiled on a directive by Lord Bishop Thomas Lewis O'Beirne , who was Bishop of Meath from 1798-1822 approx, there were no Callon/Callan protestant parishioners in the areas around Meath including Siddan. I am guessing that the "by license" may refer to something similar to dispensation and that Mary Callan may have been from Roman Catholic religion. Thomas and his father Anthony appeared to have converted to catholicism by 1840 - around the time or just after Catholic Emancipation. I will post the records in the next post. I know that EddieW from Australia who is related to these Hann/Hands via a marriage in Dublin between a Butler and Hann/Hand has located Jane Miller's baptismal record from Drumconrath parish in 1819. The birth record which wasn't sourced until now was her future husband, Thomas Hann. Now we have it as 1814. Strongly used names in the male family line include Anthony, Alexander and George. I have found records for a George Han(d) in Stabannon area , Paynestown within the boundaries of Louth near rural Ardee. He was buried in what appears to be a graveyard generally reserved for COI burials in Dunleer area. This shows some spreading of the family to either side of the Meath/Louth border.

    Best regards,

    Ian

  • Thank you for posting so much on the Hand and or Hann family from Syddan, Lobinstown area.  My cousin and I have just started digging into our family and it appears that we are descended from George Hand who married Judith Pritchard. With the number of Georges you have identified I am having some difficulty trying to determine which George is the husband of Judith.  Do you have any insight on this?

  • Hi there,

I'm doing some family research at the moment (I'm based in Australia but from Dublin) and it looks like I'm decended also from the Hanns, George Hann (1783-1858) who married Judith Pritchard (1800-1883). They are my maternal grandmother's great grandparents. It seems my mother has a very long family history in and around Lobinstown. My grandmother mentioned above was Martha Dillon (later Stallard). Her father, Samuel Dillon, had left Meath for Dublin around the turn of the 20th century, but to my knowledge, all his siblings remained.

I'm looking forward to visiting Meath in 2022 to see some of these places for myself and I'd love to meetup/talk to others also searching!

    Thank you!
