Can anyone please help me.  I'm looking for a marriage between Joseph and Kate Walsh from Oldcastle Joseph born about 1873 he died in Oldcastle 1947, his wife Kate died in 1954 Oldcastle.  They had 3 sons   John Joseph born 1903 (I think) and my grandad Peter born 1905, their youngest son was born after the 1911 census.  The 1911 census shows Joseph and Kate Walsh both born in Meath and their 2 sons are both born in West Meath.  I know when both sons sailed to America, the shipping form shows their place of birth as  in Carn.

The 1911 census address is 7 Fennor Lower, Oldcastle Meath.  I know from my dad and his sisters the address was Rudagh in Oldcastle.  I have searched and searched for a marriage for Joseph and Kate Walsh but have been unable to find this!!  All I know is Kate had an older sister called Lizzie who married a farmer as my dad remembers staying on Lizzies farm for the holidays when he was younger.  If anyone can give me some advice or help it would be very much appreciated. I'm guessing that the year of Kate and Joseph Walsh marriage would have been about 1902.

Thanks very very much

Cathy

  • Hi Cathy,

There is only 1 marriage record on www.rootsireland.ie/ for Joseph Walsh in Meath - 1891. However, I checked the parish and it wasn't Oldcastle but Collinstown R C.

I searched for Joseph's birth and got 3: 2 in 1871 and 1 in 1875 (plus a Josephine Mary 1873 in the list!)

The 1871's would make him 20 if the 1891 marriage was his.

Doesn't help you much Cathy bu it's all I could find.

You might want to have a look on rootsireland if you have't laready done so.

  • Rootsireland doesn't have complete information for Meath. I don't know what civil records they have, because they don't list them, but I know they are missing some.  familysearch.org has the Civil Registration Index and Ancestry has the index with a listing of other names on the same page so you can match bride and groom. I don't have a subscription anymore so I can't check that, but there were 1 Joseph Walsh married in 1902, 12 in the  years 1901, 1902, 1903, but I don't know where. What is the name of the bride? Have you checked the 1901 census to see where she lived?

None of the marriages I see on family search are for Meath.

  • Hi Mary

Thanks for your help.  I dont know Kate's maiden name.  On the 1911 census for Joseph and Kate Walsh it says they were both born in Meath and their 2 sons were born in Westmeath.  I found Joseph and Kate's deaths in Oldcastle, Joseph was born 1873 and died in 1947 Aged 74yrs and Kate born in 1870  died in 1954 Aged 84yrs. My dad remembers at the time travelling over to Rudagh Oldcastle when his nan Kate died, but didn't attend her funeral as he was too young so I'm presuming that Kate and Joseph would have both been buried in St.Bridgets, Oldcastle.

I'm still a member on ancestry but haven't got a clue what marriage would be the correct one for Joseph and Kate Walsh.

I have looked on the 1901 census for Joseph Walsh in Meath and could only find one Walsh family-

John Walsh Aged 61yrs his wife Mary aged 59yrs and Joseph (spelt Jowseph) Son aged 16yrs and a daughter Magy Aged 14yrs.

I didn't think it was the same Joseph as I was looking for, as on the 1911 census for Joseph and Kate Walsh it shows Joseph aged 36yrs.

I google it, but it seems Tubrid is a section of Oldcastle. Joseph Walsh is 31.

    As far as Ancestry

Search for Joseph Walsh and the year 1902  (give it a plus or minus 1) When you view there should be a list of names - see if one is for a Catherine or Katherine, that might be yours. You will have to send for the actual record (ask for a photocopy, not a certificate) and it will have the name of the fathers of both the bride and groom.

If you don't have any luck, I'll try on Tuesday when I am at the genealogical society where I volunteer - they have ancestry

  • Ancestry instructions not very clear

    You'll get a list of Joseph Walsh es - I think 12

click view record and there should be a list of other names on the page - one of them will be the bride - you may find a match

Hi Cathy, not sure if you still need help but stumbled across this tonight.

It seems likely that the marriage wasn't registered but I can see the birth of John Joseph in Carn in 1904 and Catherine Mary in 1910 who I assume died young. The mother is Kate Fox. If you consult the death cert of Kate Walsh in later years, Elizabeth Curran, sister is the informant. Searching for a marriage of an Elizabeth Fox a match with a Philip Curren pops up. This Elizabeth was from Miltown and had parents called John Fox and Bridget Halpin. Pop these into rootsireland (or familysearch) and you will see the whole family including Catherine. You can see them in the census too. I haven't researched Joseph yet but I hope this gives you a lead. Best wishes, Linda Jane.

  • Hi Linda

Thank you ever so much for your message.  Its taken me ages to work out how to reply to your message.

I have got Kate (nee Fox) Walsh death certificate and yes the informant was Kate's younger sister Elizabeth who married Philip Curren.  I also have Joseph Walsh death certificate he died (I think off hand) in 1947, Oldcastle.  I did try and find both Joseph or Kate on the 1901 census but can only find them on the 1911 census.  Joseph and Kate had another son Patrick born in 1912, Oldcastle.

Thank you once again for the infomation you kindly sent me.

    Catherine
