Hi,  I am looking for the parish or townland for my gg grandfather John Bernard Fitzsimmons.  He was born between 1810 and 1821 in Meath.  Roman Catholic. Farmer.  His children's names were:  James, Mary, Charles and John.  Certain records have pointed to Monalty.

He emigrated to NY in 1846 and married Anne Smith who also was from Meath.  She is related to a Thomas Smith who's obituary stated be was from Rathbaur Meath.  Rathcore?  Rathmore?

Any help or thoughts on how to narrow these down is appreciated.

I checked the 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Moynalty parish. There is a James Fitzsimons listed for Rathbane townland and a Patrick Fitzsimons in Moynalty townland.Since John's oldest son is James, the Rathbane record is a good possibility. There are also a very large number of Smith records in this parish including a John Smith in Rathbane townland.

Hi Roger, I just saw this reply!  I thank you for this info.  Could it be a coincidence that a relative of Anne Smith - hs obituary stated he came from Rathbaur, Meath - as I have looked for a Rathbaur and can't find one - I have often wondered if it was Rathbane?  Also, John and Anne were supposedly married in New York, so it was a long shot that they were from the same townland if they didn't marry in Ireland??

  • Many times the written n looked like a u

Many emigrants lived near families from where they lived in Ireland and possibly the romance did not develop until they reached the States. Age of Anne may have been a factor also.
