Hi! Just joined here last evening. I am trying to find information on my Fitzpatrick ancestors. My paternal grandmother was Harriet Emily Fitzpatrick(1889-1976) born in Malta and married to James Henry Amos Keast. Her dad was James Joseph Fitzpatrick jr(1855-1915) born/baptized in  Enniscorthy, Wexford and married to Harriet Emily Cox-Barclay. His dad was James Joseph Fitzpatrick sr(1831-????) born/baptized in Rochfortbridge, Meath and married to Joanna Canavan. This is where it gets murky. I believe his dad was Owen Fitzpatrick born/baptized in 1800 in Kells, Meath and married(in Rochfortbridge) to Mary Mal???-I can't make out her last name but on ancestry it says Malone was mother of James sr but marriage is listed as Maliffe. The part of the name I can make out resembles neither. I think his dad was an Owen Fitzpatrick as well(no birth date) and married to Ann or Elinor Lee. Any help you could provide in confirming this or in helping me go farther back with any degree of surety would be greatly appreciated. I am new to genealogy research and most of my info is from Ancestry.ca or familysearch. Thank you in advance.

  • Dear Allie Rose:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

I have traced a James Fitzpatrick born in 1855 in Enniscorthy County Wexford whose parents are:  James Fitzpatrick & Joanna Canavan.  His date of baptism is 18 April 1855 and his baptismal sponsors were:  Myles Quirk and Margaret Fitzpatrick.  This record is available on Roots Ireland which is a fee paying website.  In addition, the parish registers for Enniscorty are available for free on the National Library of Ireland website at the link below:

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0593

From your post, it appears that your Harriet Emily Fitzpatrick's father was a James Fitzpatrick married to Joanna Canavan.  You might confirm if this is the case or if the record above is accurate.

The James Fitzpatrick & Joanna Canavan family consisted of 5 other children (daughters) born to them in addition to James.  They were born between the years 1855-1869.  You should be able to find these baptisms in the registers linked above at the National Library of Ireland.

Another free website that you will find useful is the Irish Genealogy website which lists the Civil Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Ireland from 1864.  You can access this for free at the link below:

    http://www.irishgenealogy.ie

You will want to click on the "Civil Records" tab and to look for names under the Registration District of Enniscorthy.

You may also be able to trace the family through the 1901 & 1911 Census at the following link:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Tracing back, you mentioned that James Fitzpatrick's father, James was born in Meath.  This would seem to be a distance to where he raised his family.

I found a marriage entry for James Fitzpatrick and Joanna Canavan whose marriage was recorded in Enniscorthy on 5 November 1854.  Again, this marriage entry should be in the Enniscorthy parish registers listed on the National Library of Ireland link above.

His witnesses were:  William Shearman and Anne Bryan.

I did find a baptism record for a James Fitzpatrick baptised in Enniscorthy on 15 February 1821 to a Walter Fitzpatrick and Ann Fitzgerald.  This may or may not be your ancestor, but again, you should consider this and it is also in the parish registers listed above.

There is a baptism record for a Joanna Canavan baptised in Enniscorthy on 17 June 1833 to John Canavan and Catherine Grannell.  Her sponsors were:  Patt Redmond and Mary Hatchell.  Also in the parish registers listed above.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.  You will find that a James Fitzpatrick held a small holding in Kilpierce townland in the civil parish of Templeshannon (Catholic parish of Enniscorthy) in Griffith's Valuation.

Again, this may or may not be your James Fitzpatrick, but it is worth looking at.

The very best of luck with your research.  Please consider creating a profile of one of your James Fitzpatrick ancestors for the XO Chronicles.  You can do so by clicking on the tab marked "XO Chronicles" at the top of the page.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hi Jane. Thank your for your suggestions. I have used the free sites but will check out the pay one again. I'm sorry that my post was confusing. James Joseph Fitzpatrick Jr and Harriet Emily Cox-Barclay were the parents of Harriet Emily Fitzpatrick. James Joseph Fitzpatrick Sr and Joanna Canavan were the parents of James Joseph Fitzpatrick jr . Anyone born prior to that I have problems proving. Thanks again!
