Hi, Just hoping to surface some info about my Paternal Great-grandmother, Jane Rooney

  • Jane Rooney was born 1829-1834 in Ireland. 
  • Cannot find birth records, but suspect Westmeath(?) as her father was named Laurence Rooney, b. 1805, (son of Patrick Rooney & Rose Gealon) in Delvin, Crowinstown,Kellalagh,Killeagh, Meath Diocese, Westmeath County. May have died 7 Feb. 1841 in Multyfarnham Parish, Meath Diocease, Westmeath            
  • Mother: Christian Smith - b. July 10, 1813 in Curraha Parish, Donaghmore and Killride, Meath (daughter of Thomas smith and Catherine Lacey); may have d. 1865-6 in Kiltcomb, Mayne, Westmeath

Any pointers gratefully accepted.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out

    There won't be any birth records available for anyone in Ireland prior to 1864 when civil registration was introduced. Before this time you are dependent on parish records. I haven't been able to locate a baptism for Jane or any other children of the couple in Westmeath or elsewhere in the period you suggest 1829-34.  

    It may be the case that Jane was born in a parish and at a time that predates parish records. You could keep an eye on the Early Birth Index as it is constantly updated. Did Jane marry in Ireland?

    Found the baptism of her sister Mary

    Mary Rooney, baptised 26 April 1820 in the parish of Ardcath co.Meath , parents Laurence Rooney and Christian Smith,  no other children. There is a Christian Smith who died in 1822 Athboy co Meath. These records can be found on Rootsireland.ie a subscription website (see attachment)

    Note I do not think it was possible that Christian Smith gave birth to Mary at the age of 7, maybe you have the wrong year of birth for Christian? This might be a better match:

    Christian Smyth baptised 24 May 1802 in Kells, co. Meath, parents Michael & Bridget Smyth

  • Yes, thank you very much. I had come upon the baptism for Mary, which puzzled me, but now this other birth record for Christian may put things to right. 

    I will keep searching in hopes of finding something about Jane. She arrived in US in 1853, and married here. I have found a record of a Jane Rooney living in Liverpool before departure. Perhaps that is her. Again, thank you so much. JoAnne
