Thomas Fanning and Johanna Ryan's daughter Eliza was born c. 1831.

Eliza married Richard Kain in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia in 1860.

Johanna Fanning came to Australia, died 5 May 1886. On her headstone it states she came from Tumervarah, Tipperary. The only name that I can find close to that is Toomyvara. Can I make the assumption that the two names are the one and the same?

I am arriveing in Ireland on the 26th September.

I looked at all of the townlands that start with "T" in Co. Tipperary and Toomyvara is the best match for Tumervarah.

  • Hello kathleen,

Sorry for not replying immediately to your email. Thank you for the link.

I am now back into researching my Fannings and I am sure I have located their place in Ireland. I visited Toomevara and learnt some fasinating history, as well as I viewed the typed transcripts (in alphabetical) order of the church registers. At the moment I still have a couple of questions. That is why I wanted to post another question here and that is how I found your reply. Michael certainly moved a long way from most of his family down in Victoria.

If you would like to contact me - jvoytas@bigpond.net.

    regards Suzanne

  • Hi Suzanne,

Tried contacting you via your email but it bounced back!

I am interested to know how your family history searching went in Tipperary and what you were able to discover about your Fanning ancestors in Toomyvarah.

Don't know if my ancestors and yours are connected but it is possible.

    Hope to hear from you.

  • hello Kathleen,

    My apologies correct email jvoytas@bigpond.net.au

My known family history to date is Thomas Fanning and Johanna Ryan  were from the townland of Glenaguile, civil parish Aghnameadle; Roman Catholic parish Toomevara

Her parents were named as Edward Ryan and Mary Gleeson on her death certificate, she died 5 May 1886 and is buried at Beechworth. Vic. Australia.

From the transcripts of St Stephens in Toomevera and Johanna's  (aka Judy) death certificate they had 8 children-

    Thomas c 1830; Eliza baptised 26-9-1832; Mary bap 16-1-1835; John c 1840; Michael c 1842; Edward bap 1-5-1842; Johanna c1845; Richard bap 10-4-1847.

When going through the parish registers online I found that Eliza was recorded as Fannen; Mary as Fanane; Richard as Fannen.

However Richard was not named at all on her death certificate.

I can say with certainty that only Thomas snr and Richard did not come to Victoria, Australia.

I descend from Eliza through her 2nd marriage to Richard Kain.

At the moment I know that besides Eliza only Thomas jnr and Johanna had children in Australia. Still trying to trace Mary.

Thomas jnr married Maria Byrne and Johanna married Thomas Carey. Headstones for Thomas and Johanna Carey in the Beechworth Cemetery near the family plots for the Kains and Fannings.

It was very interesting to see that the headstone for Michael was identical to the one erected for his mother Johanna. Thank you for the link. The website Austcem is a wonder, use it constantly.

I have found the name Fanning to be very popular in early Victoria

i have received another suggestion to look at the cemetery of Ballycahill, Co Tipperary, apparently full of Fannings.

So pleased that  your tried again and just maybe we have ancestors in common.

    cheers Suzanne
