My great grandfather, Edward Cahill was born in Templemore near Thurles, son of John Cahill and Mary Shanahan (born 1816) on 29th december, 1845. He emigrated to Australia in about 1863 at these of 18.
They had a fairly tragic time of it in Ireland. Edward had one brother, Patrick, who was killed in a neighbourhood snowball fight at the age of 16. His father John emigrated to the US to find work, but died over there before he could send for his family.
Edward worked hard and eventually brought out his mother from Ireland. They settled in a place called Salisbury plains in NSW, and he established a property called Pallis Hills, after a farm he had worked on in Ireland.
I am coming to Ireland next month for the first time to visit the lands of my ancestors and would love any information about my relatives.
Thanks, Lauren

Lauren:
The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Templemore parish showed five Cahill records and two Shanahan records. No John listed, however, if your great-grandfather was the oldest son, he may have been named after his grandfather. Note the Edward Cahill record in Kiltillane. Also, the Shanahans lived in Kiltillane
