I am so frustrated. I am trying to find the birth place of my gr-grandfather, Nicholas Murphy. He was born in Ireland in 1842. His parents names were John and Mary (see the problem). I know this is the most popular surname in Ireland, but where do I start?
Thanks so much,
Pat Murphy-Zezelic

Pat:
The 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Templemore parish shows two John Murphys: one in Strade and the other in Tawnagh More townland. Assuming your John Murphy was alive in 1856 and leased land, he is likely one of the two.

Thank you Roger,
In error, I put my Murphys under Templemore. Actually that is where my Mulroy side comes from. I have absolutely no idea where the Murphys are from. With the surname Murphy, and Mary and John as their firstname, I may never find where they are from. I have searched Griffiths Valuation, and there are hundreds of John Murphys in 1857.
Thanks again,
Pat

Hi Pat,
I searched www.rootsireland.ie/ for births/baptisms 1842 of Nicholas Murphy with parents John & Mary & surprisingly got no matches until I extended the search to + - 10 years when there was 1 match - 1834 in Louth.
I suspect the problem might be that he was from one of the counties whose records are not included on that site: Carlow, Clare and Kerry.
Hope that might narrow it a little for you Pat.

I have a 2 great grandmother Mary Murphy b. abt 1844 who married a James Lynch and then came to Australia. Their daughter Lucy, who is my great grandmother, was born in NSW.
Maybe there is a connection somewhere there.I have no other information from Ireland.
I hope you can find your John & Mary.
Regards, Di Tate.
