Could you provide names and time periods for your two families. I took a quick look at the 1901 census and there were no Fairs in Crossboyne parish but some in a neighboring parish. There were Mullens in Crossboyne in 1901.

  • Hi Roger. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I just joined so I'm thrilled to get help!

Here are the details, as I know them:

    James A. Fair, b. 1827, married Ann Mullen, b. 1835

    James had siblings:

    - Julia, b. 1807, married John Brady. [As a widow, she held a land title in Cloonbonnif in 1842. She then emigrated to Natick, MA with her son Charles.

    - Charles F., b. 17 APR 1810

    - William, b. 1822

All emigrated to Boston in the mid1850's and lived in Natick, MA, where they are buried.

I have all their spouse names and death dates, if that's of use.

The parents of James A. FAIR [see above]:

    James FAIR

Julie DUNLANEY [or probably DELANEY] [I see DELANEY's listed in land grants in the Mayo area, adjacent to FAIR land grants.]

Both James's and their children are listed in the church records of: Crossboyne/Tagheen Parishes

    Town: Cloonbonnif [or Parks South].

As for the MULLEN's I know very little, so would also like to research that line. I see quite a few MULLINS listed as having land in Mayo, so that is most likely the correct spelling.

Thanks so much. Feel free to write me directly at dawn@lakegroup.com as that makes it easier.

Do you live there in Ireland?

I'll be traveling to Ireland on 18 OCT and staying through 30 OCT and would love to meet!

  • Hello again, Roger. You mentioned there were no FAIR's in Crossboyne in the 1900 census; however, there were some in nearby parishes. May I know which other parishes? I can add those to my search areas.

    Thank you again!

  • Dawn:

Please go my web site www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census   check Co. Mayo and enter Fair in the head of household surname field and you will get 15 households. The parish is in the 2nd column.

I live north of Baltimore so I won't be able to meet up with you on your trip to Ireland. (Too bad for me!)

I will look at the other info and get back to you.

  • Roger, your website is incredible. I spent the last 2 hours browsing and only got to half the neat pages in there. The access to the 1901 census is very helpful. I searched all four of my lines and found quite many good leads.

One thing I'm curious about. In searching the Griffith's database for James FAIR, it turned up 0 results but I did another search for him in the Title Applotments Book and he is listed as having lots of land.

    Thank you so much!

Glad you found the web site helpful. I have been working on the 1901 census for over 15 years. I still continue even though the National Archives site has been live for a couple years. Sometimes the National Archives site is hard to use and their are a lot of misspellings. I have five completed counties: Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Galway. Currently working on Donegal.

  • Roger, I am so impressed - 15 years of working on the 1901 Census. I don't know how I could contribute to your research work but I certainly would if there is any project I could contribute to. Please let me know!

    thanks again, Dawn

  • Were any of these Mullens blacksmiths by any chance? I had Mullen relatives further North towards Charlestown.

  • There were plenty of Fair families in the 1850s and 1860s etc. A branch of my Neary ancestors settled in Natick .John Neary married a Margaret Faire in Ireland and their children settled there to be near her relatives .In the Massachusetts census of 1855 and 1865 at Ancestry the name was often spelled Fayr .Hope this helps .Bernard
