  • Hi there,

Please keep the messaging on this message board. Doing so, will help others to answer your query. The more information that is kept online, the better the chance you have of getting good answers.

There are RC church records for Shrule dating from 1831 (baptismal and marriage records). These can be accessed through the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2438. The General Register Office (GRO) have these records, but they only date from 1864. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for assistance.

You could try checking the 1901 and 1911 census records here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Or try the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.failteromhat.com or here: www.askaboutireland.com

Hopefully, someone living in the local community will be able to shed more light for you.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • Any help in finding information on Margaret Sharkey. Family stories indicate she might have come from here(Shrule) Born abt 1866. She married my Grandfather Thomas Hannan in Stockton on Tees,Co.Durham,England 1889. He was the first of my family born in England 1865, so his family must have come to England prior to that as according to the Census's all his siblings were born in Ireland with no County or Parish indicated.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Regards Leo
