I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, Stephen Cain (Keane). He was born aroung 1877 in County Mayo. His father was Michael Cain, and his mother was Bridget Bermingham. He had 3 brothers Michael, Patrick, and John. He had 2 sisters Ann and Bridget. This information was given to me by family members.

I found the 1901 and 1911 census info with Michael, Bridget, Michael, and Bridget. It also looks like there is information about John on the same census information, but in a different building. I am trying to understand if this is Stephen's family.

I know that Stephen left Ireland, and emmigrated to Paisley, Scotland. He is on the 1901 census married to Bridget Scahill.

    Col

Thank you so much. I see on the census for Michael Cain in both 1901 and 1911, a John Cain living on the same street, or in the same town.  I guess I have to find his census information for John.

I also need to find a source for Bridget.

I am very new at this, what would be the reasons for not finding a marriage license?

Also, would knowing that they were in Oughaval Parish, tell me which church they attended, and where they might be buried?

Thanks again, I truly appreciate all your help!

  • I had a look for Bridget's baptism on rootsireland but there is none from Mayo; there are 50 from other counties 1845 + - 10 years.

There are 99 Birminghams in the Tithe Applotments 1820s & 30's (free on line) but only 1 in Mayo

This is the only burial record I could find for Michael

The Nat Library of Ireland has the RC registers freely available. Search Oughaval and you'll get the records available which includes marriages & baptisms from various periods. It's tough going but might be worth a look.

Im not an Oughaval expert so I'm not sure about the church question. The records I sent previously are civil or RC so have a look for churches in Ougaval.

Billion Graves has Oughaval records but no Cains or Birminghams. There are some early Cains in Burrishoole cemetery which is not far from Aughavale (alternate spelling)
