I am searching the origins of my husband's family. His great-grandfather was born around 1845 & moved to England, but I don't know when. He appears on English censuses from 1871 & gives his place of birth as Westport. He married in Co Durham in 1868, & his marriage certificate, gives his father's name as Timothy Cleary, labourer. I have searched in a few places, but cannot find Timothy anywhere. Does anyone have any good ideas to help in my search? PS I find the situation of civil parishes & religious parishes very confusing! Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I assume your ancestors were RC. The baptismal records for the RC parish of Oughaval (Westport) start in 1845 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1043
I searched Roots Ireland in the Oughaval records and did not find any Cleary baptismal records with father Timothy. Also did not find a Timothy Cleary marriage record.
I looked at the 1855-1856 Griffiths Valuation Head of Household listing for Oughaval civil parish. There was no Timothy Cleary record but there was a Thaddeus Cleary.http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/oughaval.htm
