At last I've located g-grandfather Martin Tighe's death certificate...feel like I've found a treasure! His parent's names were Mary Burke and Jas Tighe - and the spelling is noted as Tighe (not Tigue). The name Jas threw me a bit - wasn't sure if it was abbreviated and what it's Irish (or maybe British) roots could be?
I then located a Jas. Tighe on a passenger list of emigrants arriving in New York from Ireland 1846-1851. He arrived on July 9, 1849 from Liverpool on the ship "Charlotte". His age was given as 40, which would make him old enough to be Martin Tighe's father - Martin was born in 1839 and arrived in New York in 1863 on the ship "City of New York".
Martin's mother, Mary Burke - could she have been from Galway?
Any further light you can shed on this Tighe thread would be much appreciated!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!.
Jas. is an abbreviation for James.
Although Tighe is a Mayo surname, the name is also found in good numbers in Sligo and Roscommon. Do you have a document indicating Mayo or is it family lore.
Do you know that James left Ireland in 1849 without his family? The record you found could be for another James Tighe.
I did check on Roots Ireland and could not find a baptismal record for a Martin Tighe with parents James Tighe and Mary Burke. I searched from 1834-1844. Many of the RC parishes in the West of Ireland do not have records back to 1840.
Let me know.

Thank you!
May be well to search in the other counties/parishes you note...we have no specific evidence that Martin Tighe's roots were in County Mayo. I do have a Griffith's Valuation search that was done for Martin Tighe/Tigue in Mayo. Sligo and Roscommon do appear on some entries. Can the Griffith's search be done for James Tighe in all three counties?
Your help is much appreciated,

You can't search for Griffiths data for three counties. Just one at a time. Try www.askaboutireland.ie There is a Griffiths Tab which you can use to search the three counties.

I've spent some time in the Griffiths records...Mayo has the largest number of James Tighe's, followed by Sligo - there are none in Roscommon. In Mayo County, the parishes noting a James Tighe resident are Ballysakeery, Kilcommon, Kilmore, Kilcolman, Tagheen, Kilfian and Lackan; in Sligo County the parishes are St. John, Ballysadare and Kilmacallan.
James Tighe married Mary Burke - their son, Martin (ggf) was born abt 1840-43, emigrated to US in 1863. Is it possible to search parish baptismal and marriage records and civic records for same? James and Mary could have been married late 1830's - don't know if Martin had any siblings. No record yet of any other Tighe's making the passage within a similar timeframe as he did. I would suspect his parents did not leave Ireland - might there be possible death records at parish or civic level?
Thank you for your continued help!

Civil death records start in 1864. www.irishgenealogy.ie has death index records from 1864-1890 and actual images of death records from 1891 to well into the 1900s. The Irish government plans to add the images for the 1864-1890 at some point in the future. A few RC parishes kept death records prior to 1864, most did not.
I previously searched for Martin's baptismal record with no success. I just looked for a James Tighe/Mary Burke marriage record in all of Ireland on Roots and got no record. Likely the church no longer has records back to the 1830s.

Not sure where to take the search next for James Tighe/Mary Burke...might there be another route through the parishes where I noted there was a James Tighe on the Griffiths Valuation? Also, found another possible angle - on the passenger list for the ship, City of New York, that my ggf Martin Tighe arrived on in Apr 1863, there is a Mary Tighe also listed - same age, same ship and arrival date. Maybe they were twins - and if that might lead to any other Irish records where twin siblings might have been somehow noted??
You have been most helpful (and patient)! I seem to be stretching for new sources to find Martin's Irish roots!
Thank you, as always

It is likely that church records for Martin or his family do not exist.
Can I suggest autosomal DNA testing as an avenue to identify matches who might have more info on the Tighe family?
